I have no clue what I’m doing
and that’s why I’m doing it
I’ve started writing this first entry upwards of 10 times at this point. I have a draft saved in TextEdit, in Hemmingway, a Trello card, and across 3 or 4 scraps of paper. After reading each draft aloud, I realized that none of them sound even a bit like me. Fuck. I’m overthinking the whole thing.
So here we go. In an effort to get this party started, I’m just going to go for it. not even going to edit this one.
I’m typically what the folks over on reddit would call a lurker, and generally don’t contribute to many conversations online. I’ve resolved to remedy the situation through writing, to share what I know and learn what I don’t.
I’d love to say that most of what I write about will be related to the web and interaction design (and it will all probably tie in in one way or another), but there are other aspects of my life that shape and mold my design processes and find their way into my professional life. We’ll see, I suppose.
In closing, I’ve compiled a list of “commandments” I’m hoping to adhere to in my writing.
- If you know something worth sharing, you should be sharing it.
There will always someone who knows it better than you, but there will sure as hell be others who are thankful you spelled it out.
- If you don’t know something, share that too.
Facilitate conversation and everyone is better for it. Figure it out and go back to 1.
- Writing can only make you better.
You’ll think more critically and be able explain yourself more clearly.
- Talk about the process.
Show people how you work and what works for you.
- Just generally have an opinion and challenge yourself to get better.
Complacency leads to stagnation.
- Be transparent and honest.
Sharing your successes and failures is important. Don’t be a dick.
- Don’t be overly negative.
There’s too much negativity in our industry. I don’t want to contribute to it. DON’T BE A DICK.
