Although the “power users” are the ones that are also spreading your product (hopefully). When power users are happy, they talk to their peers, which creates a trust loop and drives more demand for your product.
The focus on average vs. mature user centric design is also a function of product life cycle. Very early on its all about power users, slightly later on the product should prepare to cross the chasm by focussing the design for mere mortals. From that point onwards it’s all about getting to repeatability, organic growth and the long term product market fit. And then the balance adjusts back to the power user, solving glaring gaps for average users, as well as distribution-oriented roadmaps.
