A Peachy Diary #10: I Can Wait for ‘No Man’s Sky’

Space ain’t going anywhere.
So, this trailer was, pardon my french, freakin’ nuts. The idea of exploring a procedurally generated universe seemed incredible to me as I watched this spaceship fly out of a planet’s atmosphere, travel by an asteroid belt and into another one all in real time without a loading screen in sight.
Gigantic creatures, mysterious fauna, minerals to mine and a ship to upgrade: this all sounded loads of fun to me as a gamer. Now, the game is out, and the internet is in an unbelievable uproar due to this amalgamation of hyperbolic disappointment. My best pal also gave me some hands-on time with the actual game, and after about an hour, I reached my consensus:
I can wait.
Ben Kuchera of Polygon wrote an opinion piece called ‘No Man’s Sky is the New Destiny’, and I couldn’t agree more. When Destiny released, I played the absolute hell out if it, squeezing every single drop of blood I could from the vanilla stone and left feeling empty-handed and disappointed. From all the hype and promise, I couldn’t help but feeling misled and half-full after playing, and it’s incredible to see Destiny for what it is today with all of its updates and expansions. Content stacked on content stacked on features stacked on even more content, it’s hardly recognizable from what it used to be, and I completely agree that No Man’s Sky will be the same way.
This is why I can wait to buy No Man’s Sky in about a year or so, at a much cheaper price and filled to the brim with all sorts of updates. The thing about video games is that people need to remember that they’ll be around for quite a long time. We live in a time where the release of a game doesn’t establish it as a finished product (for better or for worse), but I trust that the tiny team of folks at Hello Games is truly passionate about what they have here.
After the freakishly long development time, I have every confidence that they’re going to get closer and closer to their true vision thanks to player feedback, and that when I finally take off into the stars, I’ll find the experience I’ve been dreaming about in full fruition.
