I think that you have missed a bigger problem.
There are a large number of disparate groups and cultures in America. Many of which have vastly different world views and philosophical systems.
If one group is claiming to have authority and truth, and is claiming that other groups entire worldview is fake and valueless then why would those other groups not want to fight back.
If one group (the media) is approaching life with a modernist philosophy based on empirical evidence and statistical facts, and another cultural group (religious adherents) is approaching life with a philosophical focus on narrative and moral values, and yet another group is approaching life, with a philosophy of postmodern deconstruction, skeptisim and a focus on the phenomenology of lived experience (many millenials), then each group has a different philosophical stance on what is real, true and important.
Abstract, empirical statistics that say that the ecconomy is doing well, would be fake news to someone who does not value empirical rationalism, and who has a lived experience of many of their friends losing Jobs in their local community.
On the other hand some one saying that the love of Jesus is the most important aspect of the health of their community, would be seen as fake news to a rational modernist reporter.
Yet again a group millenials (on 4chan.org) who worship the self invented god kek (another word for lol, or laugh out loud), who were raised on South Park and postmodern TV, who fundamentally believe that all institutions are self interested and flawed, who have experienced being completely disempowered and reduced to being a consumer and target of advertising, these millenials would also consider mainstream media, deciet news or fake news.
What I have covered here are just 3 short generalisations of vastly different subcultures within America.
Each is valid, and each has a large number of members.
The news of each group is fake to the others.
Each group needs to listen to and understand the other groups.
If the one group, the modernist rational mainstream media continues to claim to be superior, then the other groups will view it as an enemy and will fight against it.
Rather than attacks on so called fake news, which end up being understood as attacks on other group’s philosophy, you should focus on understanding the other groups, and then communicating to each group using their culture, value system and philosophy.
