The first word

Much like I’m a lapsed Catholic, I’m a lapsed writer. You would think that as someone who is a professional communicator I would spend my day creating content. Instead, I find myself shuffling papers and managing others doing the work on my behalf — not because I’m a slacker but because I work at a corporation that uses external agencies for most of our creative content. I miss writing. A lot. I don’t know if I’m an amazing writer, and I may never win an award, but I can hold my own.

So that brings me to Medium. My day job enables me to meet some really interesting people who work in the culinary world. Some of their stories are nothing short of amazing and I want to hone my skills by telling them. But not the stories of top chefs who have book deals and Michelin stars. I’ll work to tell the stories of line cooks or front-of-house staff who are often forgotten. Like many working class stiffs, they do the hard work and get virtually none of the credit. I hope to change that and help them get just a tad bit of the recognition they deserve, yet don’t expect.

But I won’t just write about people who work in restaurants, or about food. I have met some very interesting people in my life and come from a long line of outcasts and miscreants so I’ll tell some of those stories, too. I want to be a short-form biographer, of sorts. We’ll see how that goes. In the meantime, I’d love to get any feedback or critique from anyone who happens upon my writing. Stay tuned…
