Talia Basma,

Keep on writing. As you say, words are powerful.

You’ve done a great job with this work. And you’re right. It’s a double standard.

I wish it was progressive here, but more and more I’m learning that it simply isn’t. Experiences such as yours illustrate this to me all the more.

You are a good person, with a good heart. Your religion doesn’t define you. You don’t owe anyone an apology for someone else’s actions. That’s insane.

I am not going to lie to you, I am concerned for you and others. I worry about people. When I see your writing I know you want to make it better. I know how you wish it wasn’t so.

I wish that too. I’m also very glad that you can feel a small amount of empowerment in your vote.

My only request is that you if you find yourself being treated badly by ignorant people in America who do not understand that your religion isn’t an indication of your tendency toward violence, that you don’t hold that against me. The truth is, this behavior is so embarrassing I wouldn’t blame you if you did.

Thank you for raising your voice. Stand tall and be strong knowing that you cannot control that which isn’t yours to own. Only the actor has power over the action.

May God (Allah, Yahweh, Abraham, Jesus, Siddhartha, Vishnu, Moses, Confucius, Lao-Tzu and/or whomever else I neglected to name) bless you and your family.

Most Respectfully,

H.
