I don’t read his words as a demand. I read them as a question. I read them as a ‘benefit of the doubt’ type statement.

Just because Nathan Whiteside is a man doesn’t mean he has no right to protect himself from harm. He has that right same as you and me.

When I see a man giving anyone the benefit of the doubt the last thing I want to do is attack him. He’s being kind. Unlearning patriarchy is not easy and we have to support any man who’s willing to listen.

Poison Ivy this response to Nathan is an unwarranted accusation. He was saying that if the commenter wasn’t trying to be a jerk and his defensiveness was not warranted, he appreciated their input.

I get that we don’t have to be nice to make a point and when we have a point whether we make it sarcastically or not, our words should be honored. I’m not saying you’re wrong about that. It’s just that he’s in the middle with this response and not dismissing the commenter’s advice outright.

So, instead of going for the throat, we could choose to see Nathan as someone who is working on himself and we can see he is open. When we see that, we can take the opportunity to educate.

Now, if you’re not interested in educating, that’s a whole other story. It’s just hard for me to see the benefit in taking a sledgehammer to his head when a slight tap would do the trick.

Wielding a sledgehammer all the time gets exhausting after a while.

Just sayin.
