I don’t have an easy solution, since I actually do completely understand why tech employers rely on these exams.

I think it’s because they don’t understand technology. I think they don’t know that the documentation is searchable and that the most important skill isn’t rogue memorization — it is instead way more about having the will to search for the answer — follow through and follow up.

Communication. Willing to examine things from all sides. Equations are things anyone can know by heart, but I’ll take someone who doesn’t over a memorizer any day of the week. Why?

Because those people don’t think of questions and answers as 1-to-1, instead they are seekers. I get frustrated with engineers when they find the “solution” to the “question” without ever wondering if the question is even worthwhile.

They are asking these questions because of their own ignorance. In fact, I’d be willing to bet they have an answer sheet in front of them. Like a damn STANDARDIZED TEST!

Tech is supposed to be about innovation. I don’t understand why fitting in the box snuggly is what anyone would want.

I’m sorry you’ve gone through these nasty experiences.
