So I read this piece when it first hit the feed a couple of days ago.

I was presented with a similar, well thought out argument just like this today.

And part of me agrees.

But I don’t agree where it comes to medium. Where people are engaging, supporting, sending private notes of well wishes and trying to help an author heal. Opening up about our own stories…Because they present themselves as a person in need of that support, but all the while they are taking your time, your energy, compassion and care — they aren’t who they are pretending to be…

In addition, it was terrible writing, intended to be sadistic and including things to sexualize the “victim” which at the time the story was said to have taken place was a child. This was intentional. This was meant to hurt people. This was not some guy looking to make some money writing a book.

If this was a fiction book pretending to be a memoir, I’d be 100% with you. But it wasn’t.

Sadly I’m afraid this is someone working very hard to be hurtful to survivors of rape and trauma. You’re right that the truth or not truth of the story doesn’t really matter.

What does matter is the energy vampirism that has occurred. Energy that we could be using to heal ourselves and helping each other.

Some things are worse than having your money taken under false pretenses.

Thanks for being cool, Elliot Nichols.
