The Golden Rule

Om Mani Padme Hum — compassion — Buddhism

Even Satanism Has a Version of the “Golden Rule

The Golden Rule is in all faiths

Several people have commented on this piece and I am proud of that — however, I realized that I forgot to say that you don’t have to be Christian — this still applies. It applies because there is a version of the Golden Rule in nearly all Religious and Spiritual Practices.

There is a link to the website I pulled much of these “golden statements” from above — the site is called “Religious Tolerance.” The organization that compiled them is in Ontario, Canada (go figure)… anyway, those I found most compelling are included, but there are even more on the site. Enjoy.

“This is the sum of Dharma [duty]: Do naught unto others which would cause you pain if done to you”. Mahabharata, 5:1517"

“Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful.” Udana-Varga 5:18
“All men tremble at the rod, all men fear death: Putting oneself in the place of others, kill not nor cause to kill. All men tremble at the rod, unto all men life is dear; Doing as one would be done by, kill not nor cause to kill.”

“Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” Matthew 7:12, King James Version.
“And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” Luke 6:31, King James Version.

Ancient Egyptian:

“Do for one who may do for you, that you may cause him thus to do.” The Tale of the Eloquent Peasant, 109–110.

“This is the sum of duty: do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you.” Mahabharata 5:1517

The religion of the Incas:

“Do not to another what you would not yourself experience.” Manco Capoc, founder of the empire of Peru. 6

“None of you [truly] believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.” Number 13 of Imam “Al-Nawawi’s Forty Hadiths.”

“…thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.”, Hebrew Scriptures (a.k.a. Old Testament) Leviticus 19:18
“What is hateful to you, do not to your fellow man. This is the law: all the rest is commentary.” Talmud, Shabbat 31a.
“And what you hate, do not do to any one.” Tobit 4:15

#1. “Strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.”
#4. “The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo your own.”
#7. “Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.”

The above is why Racism and Oppression are the MOST offensive of all Sins. Because nearly ALL connection with the Divine Rests on Respect for and Love of our fellow human beings.

This cannot even be debatable at this point. This is what God said. I am confused and saddened by the fact that so many “Religious” people turn a blind eye to this FACT. No one wants to be discriminated against. No one wants to feel disconnected from others. No one wants to feel like a foreigner in their home country.

No one wants to be judged.

But I believe that this is what God will judge us all by — did we love all God’s creations — especially God’s people — as we would have them love us? If the answer is no, you will have some explaining to do. Be prepared to explain how you missed the fucking memo. Because I will SCREAM THIS like a lunatic, until my last breath.
