Yeah…
Imma bout to drop the
DunNA NA…
(As the boy would say)
These aren’t “bad actors” that Snowden was on about. It is the government, Jennifer Brown.
And while I certainly understand your position that privacy is not really a ‘thang,’ the reasons you’re giving aren’t quite right.
The NSA has unlimited reach and resources. They are gobbling data and storing it by the datacenter load. Their collection is indiscriminate
[correction contributed by Thin Man:] AND COMPLETE.
I have a “reasonable expectation of privacy” in my own email account, in my medical doctor’s online thingy and on my social media accounts.
By the way, they are collecting CONTENT as well as metadata. Phone calls, photo messages sent via text, your entire FB account — all fed via back door right to their data centers. Is this to STOP crime? STOP terrorism?
No. Some of it is used to explain it after the fact.
The predictive algorithm — “Skynet” — has been proven faulty. See there, more innocent people being hurt by MATH.
There are a couple of people who’ve done a good job illustrating other reasons why this is important, why we should care, but John Oliver probably did it best when he went to visit Snowden in Russia:
The programs he exposed were aiding the government in their attempt to harass by way of detainment, the documentary filmmaker — Laura Poitras when Snowden found documents about her on the NSA’s network.
That is why he reached out to her in particular. He also reached out to Glenn Greenwald — who at the time was known to be critical of our government’s prosecution of whistleblowers.
He’s at the intercept now, but at the time he was with The Guardian.
Blah, backstory… anyway, if you care about freedom (which I know you do) and you care about sustainable solutions to social issues that are currently seen across our country’s landscape (which I know you do) — please do yourself a favor and watch
CitizenFour.
This is not some kid in his parents’ basement “hacking” to get back at chicks who snubbed him — the NSA is an official government agency acting in official agency capacity to spy on everyone on the damn planet.
Please don’t be flippant about it.
The NSA spied on and harassed some of our most beloved Civil Rights Activists — Dr. King Jr among them.
These fucks in our government have enough power over us. Frankly, I’m not interested in them having more.
Just give it some thought, please.
