A new season begins on Rocket League

Rocket League has gone from obscurity to eSport in no time flat. With no sign of the players slowing down they have just begun the second season of competitive play.

The way to start in the competitive scene for Rocket League is incredibly easy, but nearing the end of season one it was almost impossible to climb the ladder. The top spots of the season one leader board were all above 5,000 points.

The points system it used during season one started you at 50 and moving up, or down, in increments of less than ten. So getting anywhere of note seemed insurmountable to someone just starting out. All of that has now changed however with the introduction of season two.

Season two brings a lot more to the table then just a reset of the ranked boards. Psyonix, the makers of Rocket League, are implementing a whole new ranking system for their ranked servers.

For this new scoring system you’re not just given a number but an actual rank. These ranks are given based on merit and you can be demoted because of multiple bad showings.

Along with the concrete rankings above there is also different divisions. These divisions of ranks serve as your progression bar since the old season one progression bar is gone.

The loss of the bar and the ten game unranked are what I’m personally most excited for. At first glance I wasn’t too much of a fan of this change as I really liked seeing how my grinding was going. This change however is a much more fair way of doing the rankings, especially since all rankings were reset.

The first ten games under this new system are sort of assessment games. During this time it takes the good and the bad and figures out at what tier you should be playing at.

This is huge because even the biggest lovers of the grind don’t want to go from top 100 ranked to nothing and have to start back over. So with this new system if you play like the top 100 you get put directly into that tier.

On the flip side of that coin, newer players that maybe don’t want to grind their way to the top can be ranked on merit rather than their time to spend grinding ranks. The system is great in that it caters to both sides of the player base, but the loss of some kind of progression tracker is somewhat annoying but that’s where the new divisions come in.

The divisions kind of sub in for a progression bar, but with more purpose. The divisions not only show you if you’re getting better (or worse) but it does it at much slower rate than the old system.

That’s something else that has changed with this new system. On season one’s system a couple bad games and you could have moved down a ranking.

With the way that season two works moving up a tier requires many good showings to show that you have just gotten overall better. The good thing about that is that adversely moving down a tier requires many bad showings to prove that you are just playing outside of your league.

Season two is underway right now, and with all the upgrades to the ranking system it is more attractive than ever to check out what the competitive playlist has to offer. The new rankings also make it easier than ever to climb the ranks and get better at your Rocket league skills. So hows your season two highlight reel going to start?

Here’s my best so far!
