I graduated from university in 2010, the height of the recession in the UK. So I knew getting a job would be tough. When I finally got into an IT career, I started off in a database role, this gave me valuable work experience but something was missing, back I went on the job hunt…

In my second role, I again landed a database role. In this role, I was doing a lot of reporting for the business, which was very manual. I developed an online dashboard, where the users could go in and view these reports. This was developed using PHP. This was my first taste of development commercially, from that point on I knew I want to go down this career path.

In my latest role, I was brought in as a Junior Developer, working mainly with the Perl tech stack and bits of Ruby on Rails. I have learned so much in this role, which again inspired me to learn more and more each day.

So how do I learn new technologies? Simple contribute to open source projects….

I started to contribute to different open source projects mainly using Ruby on Rails and React. This has expanded my knowledge and has given me the drive to keep learning more….
