IA#5: Reflection on the Monuments Men
- Write your personal reaction to the film/story.
The film represented art in a different aspect as to what and how we treat it today. Art is done by one to express himself, but there is a wide range of art classification not only through the usage of paint, brush and canvas. In the movie, art is not only considered as a masterpiece of an individual, but it represents and depicts the history of the country, Germany. Art nowadays satisfies people through entertainment which is something not to be taken seriously, but not in the way of underestimation. Soldiers were used to show the value of the images and art pieces in the movie, which shifts the mindset of viewers as to how art is given respect and appreciation. One of the parts that struck me the most was when the Coronel spoke to the soldiers saying that others may underestimate their efforts and sacrifice just for the sake of art, but it is not only a typical art for those pay an important tot heir country’s dignity. This shows how art is not merely self proclaimed emotion, but a piece that speaks louder than words.
2. Write a critical analysis of the film itself (narrative, production, directing, cinematography, acting, etc.)
The film was very detailed and true to life given that it really happened and was able to satisfy the viewers for the film for it to be understood. The location in every scene also helped in giving the feeling of the past since nowadays there have been a lot of changes in different aspects of life. The accompaniment and sounds used added to the emotion of every scene which is important in films for the viewers to have contact with the movie itself. Last but not the least, are the characters which is the main factor of every movie. They were able to represent individuals and highlight their roles consequently without overpowering other actors.
3. If the Philippines had a set of “Monuments Men” during the World War 2, what could have happened differently? Is there a need for us to have a “Monuments Men” in the Armed Forces today? Please discuss.
Based on the movie, Monuments Men are composed of individuals that are always thinking of the positive side and tries to avoid war with the opposite league. If this kind of attitude was present before, then maybe World War 2 may have not happened or rather it may be less worse. In a war, it would always be about winning, but in the movie, their love for their country reigned within them which aroused the conflict in the film. Now a day, people see soldiers as heartless for they are given the imagery of being strong and dignified in what they are doing. Despite this concept, I believe that these armed forces are like the Monuments Men when known individually.
