Chris, I enjoyed this piece very much. There are indeed many tremendous technologies on the cusp of making a huge difference to our lives.
However, to maximise the benefit of these technologies we need to “undo” some of the value that has been added by technology to date.
Today’s ubiquitous computing network did not exist when most of the business software that makes the world go round was developed. These solutions were designed to operate within organisations, e.g. payroll.
I would argue that the most important technology step is to redesign that software. This is because the unique capability of the Web is that it enabled the creation of community software, e.g eBay, Uber and Airbnb. This revolutionises the relationship between supply and demand by shifting control from supply to demand.
To realise the full potential of the Web for the Digital Age, business software needs to be REPLACED with community software.
