The organic food market in Russia

The organic food market in Russia is yet to reach the tipping point where the average consumer goes green, but the trend is still a steady rise in sales of organic food.

Only 3% of the population are active green food consumers, but with a population of 144 million, that constitutes a staggering 4.5 million regularly taking the organic choice when buying food.

As in all trends the first-movers are mostly higher educated people from the upper middle class living in the big cities (Moscow and St. Petersburg), whereas the more rural parts of the country are yet to catch up — but image when they do!

Organic markets are a more and more normal sight in the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg

In 2017 total sales of organic food and drink items are expected to hit $250 million, with all parts of the organic food sector increasing sales amounts, but a particularly increased spending on organic health food.

Russia goes organic — Putin says “let’s go!”

Also from the Kremlin the focus on organic food is an official goal, as Putin has announced that a bill on organic agricultural products that was taking a bit of a slow route on the pass-highway through the parliament, recently was commented on by Putin in an official statement, as he said that the bill needed to be hurried up (!).

This is in line with his recent grande statement where he said, that “Russia is able to become the largest world supplier of healthy, ecologically clean and high-quality food”.

The place to be for agricultural companies

With the embargo still in place western companies have had a difficult time exporting food to Russia these recent years, but as Russia is looking to heavily develop its agricultural sector, aiming for self-sufficiency in 2020 and furthermore to be a leading world-supplier of organic food, companies with the know-how, hardware and experience have big opportunities in Russia.

Both when it comes to aiding in a realization of Russia’s agricultural potential (Russia is sitting on very big areas of clean, unused and healthy soil), and with an upgrade of their existing agricultural production, there is room for great participation.

With the positive growth of the sector, and the Russian governments direct involvement, now is the perfect time for agricultural companies to get in there, and be a part of this beautiful development!
