55: People leave for a reason

If you are in an organisation under heavy turbulence, both internally and externally, you should observe couple of things. Employee churn is a good indicator of “how things are”. When people are leaving a job it is usually done with one of the following reasons:

People leave their boss, not the organisation in general. People who do not get recognised (or wrong people get rewarded for a good work) will leave. Wrong people are hired and/or promoted. People are not able to pursue their passions and they want to do so elsewhere. If folks are not listened to, they will leave. It is as simple as that.

When undergoing transformation there needs to be slack and void for inviting new people to take different perspectives and responsibilities. If many people are leaving it also gives room for others. But for the leavers this is the moment of truth:

Once you know in your gut that your boss is not interested in your opinion, what other choice do you have than to find another job?

Nobody should stay in an organisation that does not value or listen to their opinions. That is the reason I encourage everyone to change jobs and look for the place where you feel happy and can contribute, learn and make most value. Leave for a reason.
