It is eight months since Instagram announced video content sharing on their platform while vine is just one year old to be out there. These two great apps have opened doors to all new ways to create short form videos on social media channels. Produced over mobile phone and seamlessly embed-able in almost every platform on the web.
Over this essay, I would like to share my thoughts on making video news on the above mentioned platforms and why every news publishers, broadcasters should embrace Instagram video capability to deliver their news to a new era. Based on analysis, TV & Newspapers are about to die. Viewers are moving from traditional media and seeking the latest, breaking news somewhere else, for instance — on twitter and Facebook.
This raise a question “How to attract current generation to consume news visually on the above channels?” or at least bring some level of attention to your news before they scroll away!
There are some models already exploring possibilities of innovative ‘Breaking News Storytelling’ over Instagram with only 15 seconds duration or Vine’s 6 Seconds long. NowThisNews is first and most solid case study. Starting with 5Ws toward more of multiple news feed serving from politic to sport to entertainment to food related news. All and all in 15" seconds with combination of Text, Audio and Visuals.
Of course, each comes with their own limitation but also bring some level of creativity, strengths and capabilities which altogether moves Short Form content forward. Making news visually is not something new. However with attention of users on their mobile screen in every moment of their day to day life, news is moving from TV hall or breakfast table or even outdoor media to users while taking shower, driving to office, transporting underground to friends and family gathering and more of places which you may never thought that your news can touch their souls and engage them more than ever before!
That doesn’t mean of simply sharing your news headline with other social networks or even pushing breaking news into their phones. It’s about interacting with users by making them part of news.
New generation of journalism has to find new ways of not only producing news with Instagram or Vine, But also narrate them as storyteller with some level of instant interactivity. To me that sounds like News is socialized!
