Neutral Review — Underground Coffeehouse

I love a variety of music: folk, rap, indie, and more. I enjoy comedy, I am a humorous person and my humor may come off as dry or awkward. I am also attached to deep reads. In all, I am an admirer and I value entertainment. There is one place I would perhaps fulfill your entertainment needs and that is the Underground Coffeehouse on Western Washington University’s campus.

Walking into the coffeehouse, the set-up of the coffeehouse does not make sense to one’s eye as a design. The harsh red color of the room and the letters of the “Underground Coffeehouse” sign on the stage does not match the antique-looking chairs and couches they have about the place and clashes pretty hard making it distracting in the establishment. A review from What’s-Up Magazine talks about how the Underground Coffeehouse has an “intimate and comfy feel for all of the events it hosts”. I agree that the Underground has a comfy feel for watching entertainment, but unfortunately, the chairs and couches at the Underground are limited. A lot of social occasions happen there and for the crowd of people that come to these events, there is not enough seating or space in the coffeehouse. Instead, they should have an open area and more seating for everyone, that way people are not trying to cram into the coffeehouse because this could be uncomfortable from time to time while trying to watch the main stage within the coffeehouse.

There are a variety of uses for the mini stage in the Underground Coffeehouse such as Open Mic Night, where anyone could sign up for the night and perform anything, Comedy Night, Poetry Night, and more throughout the week. I like the idea of there being something different each night which brings a variety of people to the Underground and something out there for everyone. Poetry, music, comedy, and more! It’s really entertaining to watch and to get to recognize the talent throughout Bellingham especially when coffee is provided.

For example, one night, I went to the Battle of the Bands to support a few of my friends who had a band at the Underground Coffeehouse called Louisa Lee and the Mouthwash Boys. There were six bands competing against each other, and unfortunately, my friends’ band got last place, but a lot of people came to support them and it was so amazing to watch them entertain the audience. One song of theirs that I fell in love with is their song called Lion (which is posted below). If you like indie rock, folk, alternative, or any other genre of music like I do, the Underground Coffeehouse is for you!

I am a very open-minded person and I think it is a great idea to have people express their talents and for others to accept one another for who they are and what they do, but for something so popular, there needs to be more room for people to go and watch these talented people perform. However, if you like coffee and entertainment, the Underground Coffeehouse is for you.
