REFLECT — October 25–31, 2019
A PLATFORM FOR GIRLS, BY WIE IEEE, NITK. It is a summary of all the tasks by WIE (Women In Engineering) that I’ve done this week.
REFLECT is a a week-long event organized by the WIE Affinity Group from 25th October to 31st October 2019.
It was be a one-week hustle to improve my confidence and skills. It included super interactive, fun activities paired with peer-learning throughout the program. It was much more fabulous than anyone’s expectations .
I would like to share the daily tasks we got :
Day 1
Where you focus is where you will find yourself.
I listed out all the possible opportunities I should apply for, and try for. I realized there are unlimited opportunities, its just one must not lose hopes and should try until a good opportunity is achieved. Opportunities are easy to miss, but we generally don’t realize how important that could have been.
October 25th:
Find 3 opportunities which include workshops, talks, events or scholarships that are:
1. Related to your field of interest and one that you have never heard of before
2. Related to the field of interest of the person sitting to your right
3. Exclusively for women
Day 2
Learnt the importance of Linkedin and Twitter
Twitter provides and encourages communication between multiple parties in a public forum, allowing you to get instant feedback from customers and potential clients. Because the communication on Twitter is open for everyone else to follow, it encourages openness and accountability in communications.
Linkedin hosts more than 500 million professional profiles, which means nearly an unlimited supply of network connections and job opportunities. From seeking a new job to maintaining your personal brand, LinkedIn is an important part of being a full-fledged professional in any industry these days.
October 26th:
Afraid of missing out on good opportunities? Worry not, we have just what you need!
It’s as simple as knowing where you want to go and making sure the right people know about it. Today we focus on how to start ensuring that the “right people know”.
Today is the day to start building your network. So, grab your laptops and get to work. Complete these two simple activities and get started building your connections:
- Create an account on LinkedIn, if you do not have one, and to strengthen your professional network. If you already have an account, make sure it is up to date with your latest internships, achievements and projects. To know more about the importance of having a good Linkedin profile,.
- Create a Twitter profile. Follow any 3 handles which provide information about opportunities you found and/or promote events in your field of interest. This will help you stay in the loop of what are the various opportunities around you as well as keep you updated about the projects undertaken by those organizations.
Brene Brown said “Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen”. It is time to start getting noticed for your work and achievements. So get out there, grab your opportunities and sail towards success!
Day 3
Thinking about ourselves is very important, we must know our weakness, our positive and negative traits.
Often we are in situations where we wonder do we know enough about our own selves? Why are we doing what we are doing? What are our self-expectations? What are our limitations?
When these questions come crashing down on us are first instinct is to dodge them. But today we are going to deal with them better by screaming back answers.
October 27th:
Grab a pen and paper and scribble your thoughts down as you introspect. Then answer the set of questions we have designed for you by organizing and restructuring these thoughts.
You have an entire day to answer these 4 very essential questions about yourself:
- Who are you?
- What do you believe in?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- How can you work on any one of the mentioned weaknesses?
Day 4
As C. S. Lewis rightly stated, “You are never too late to set another goal or dream a new dream”.
Goals create a road-map for success. They are the targets toward which you point your life. They give you a starting point and a destination to reach. Most of us are just promising to achieve the desired goals but have no clue about how to achieve them. In order to fully realize ourselves, our Long-term goals should be coupled with short-term goals.
The process of writing your goals helps you clarify what you desire to do, understand the importance of pursuing them and commit yourself to make them happen. Today’s activity is meant to nudge you to create action because a goal without action is just a sleepy eyes’ dream.
October 28th:
Take this day to light up your paths with lamps of short term goals to reach the end of the tunnel to your long term goal :
Write about your short term goal (could be academics/ personal / hobby/ applying for a program) and long term goal( where do you wish to see yourself in the next 10 years)
Day 5
Follow the ideal version of yours :)
October 29th:
If you could write a mail or send a message to someone who has accomplished your short-term/ long term goal, who would it be and what would it say?
We live in a world where it is so easy to connect and communicate with various people from different parts of the globe. It has become relatively easy to find somebody’s email id via LinkedIn or websites. Thus, writing good emails is of utmost importance.
Today’s activity aims to improve your email writing skills. Select a person who has achieved either your short-term goal or long-term goal and draft an email to her/him containing any questions you may have.
Before you proceed with writing the mail, I recommend you to read this blog post by Arya Murali, Director of the Rethink Foundation. She has covered all the essential points you must keep in mind while drafting a mail.
Day 6
VISION BOARD!

October 30th:
As we slowly approach the end of this week-long program, it is time to put all the pieces you’ve collected together.
Today you get to create your own VISION BOARD! A vision board is a concrete representation of your desires and aspirations for a compelling life. They are fun to create and can serve as an invaluable tool to motivate and inspire you towards concrete daily action in pursuit of your biggest and most important life goals.
With a vision board in hand, you will be moving toward growth in the most important areas of your life!
YouTube star Lilly Sing is a perfect example of a vision board coming true. Starting as a person just like us to an internet sensation with over 14 million followers!! Her vision board which she explains below has images on it like: The Rock (who she is friends with and works with now), meeting Selena Gomez, 5 Million YouTube Subscribers (currently at 14 Million plus) and even her on the cover of Forbes (she just made the Forbes list)
This your turn to be as creative as you want and don’t hold yourself back. Don’t be afraid to put something just because you think you may not be able to achieve it. This is your board and your dreams, slay it! :D
Day 7
Final day, all about my overall experience, which was pretty unexpected and awesome.
October 31st:
We’ve finally reached the end of this week-long program!
For your final activity:
- You should write an article on Medium stating what you have learnt over the course of this week as well as about your overall experience in this program!
So I’m writing this article :p
Here are some good things I learnt in my one week journey :
1. Be aware of the various opportunities available by learning how you can discover and leverage them
2. Improve your profile so you stand a better chance at securing them
3. Craft your learning plan to start systematically working towards your goals.
