According to Snopes, Fake News Is Not the Problem

In reading the comments on sites like Breitbart, the issue is about a segment of the population wanting to believe certain things. Once something that fits with what they want to believe is reported no level of fact checking is going to rectify the situation. That is now their truth facts be damned.

In 2011 38% of Americans still believed that the U.S. found conclusive evidence that Iraq and Saddam Hussein was involved in the 9/11 attack. I am sure this number has not changed much in the intervening years.

The issue is about people wanting and in some cases being desperate to believe a specific set of things.
