Who won the most Rugby World Cup?

The Rugby World Cup is back again. From the 20th of September to 2nd November 2019, the top 20 rugby teams in the world will battle it out for the ultimate prize. The 2019 Rugby World Cup will take place in Japan, a historic first as the nation will be the first Asian country to ever host this global sporting event.

This table shows the winners of the eight rugby world cups since 1987, and New Zealand’s fate at those cups. For the five tournaments after 1987 New Zealand failed to win the cup and in fact only reached the final once, despite being the favorite on most occasions. The 2015 win was the first successful defense of the title by any team, and New Zealand’s first away from home.
