Is truth-telling professional suicide?

What all journalists can learn from Lara Logan

In a podcast called “Mike Drop,” retired Navy SEAL Mike Ritland recently interviewed Emmy-Award winning journalist Lara Logan, who dropped some much needed truth about the journalism industry.

The chief foreign affairs correspondent for CBS News rebuked mainstream media outlets as “absurdly left-leaning” likening some journalists to “activists” or “propagandists.”

“The media everywhere is mostly liberal, not just in the U.S. But in this country, 85% of journalists are registered Democrats — that’s just a fact,” Logan said. “No one is registering Democrat when they’re really a Republican. So, the facts are on the side that you just stated: most journalists are Left, or liberal, or Democrat, or whatever word you wanna give it.”

As noted by a POLITICO article in 2017, the media bubble is worse than you think and is likely why the mainstream media was caught completely off guard by the 2016 election results. The article also notes that only 7 percent of journalists identified as Republican in a 2013 study.

“How do you know you’re being lied to? How do you know you’re being manipulated? How do you know there’s something not right with the coverage?” Logan asked. “When they simplify it all and there’s no gray. There’s no gray. It’s all one way. Well, life isn’t like that. If it doesn’t match real life, it’s probably not — there’s something wrong.”

Logan continued: “So, for example, all the coverage on Trump all the time is negative. … That’s distortion of the way things go in real life, because although the media has historically always been left-leaning, we’ve abandoned our pretense, or at least the effort, to be objective today.”

As a Pew Research Center study highlighted, two-thirds of news stories about President Trump’s first 60 days in office were considered to be negative—more than twice the negativity of recent presidents.

The Media Research Center, which has been documenting the negative mainstream media spin of Trump stories since he took office, found the major news networks trashed Trump with 90 percent of negative coverage in 2018.

Logan further added in her revealing interview that former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson admitting as much: “[Abramson] says, we would do dozens of stories about Trump every single day, and every single one of them was negative. She said, we have become the anti-Trump paper of record. Well that’s not our job.”

“We’ve become political activists, and some could argue propagandists, and there’s some merit to that,” Logan bluntly added. She emphasized during other portions of the broadcast how the few right-wing sources which exist must be sought out while the near entire mainstream media is overtly left-wing.

At the end of the podcast, Logan told Ritland, “This interview is professional suicide for me.”

We need more of this. Every time an established journalist speaks truth to power (which in this case is speaking out against the mainstream narrative), the closer we’ll get to fixing the problem with the journalism industry.

Let’s make sure that this honesty from a real journalist doesn’t go unheeded.

And keep an ear and eye out for Lara Logan. If we keep paying attention, her career will be far from over.
