Metcalfe Hall Kolkata in West Bengal is one of the heritage buildings in India. The name of Sir Charles Metcalfe hall built. The place is in the junction of Strand Road and Hair Street.
When you enter through the gate, many numbers of pillars are standing. The building architectural style like the ancient Greek temples of Athens called the Tower of the Winds.
There are 30 pillars. The pillars stand straight from the basement up to the ceiling. Metcalfe Hall Kolkata has five hall rooms and two-storied traditional building. The architecture looks the Temple of the Winds in Athens.
Charles Theophilus Metcalfe, who was the acting governor-general of British India from 1835 to 1836. The structure was created to honour his significant work in the free press of India. Construction began in 1840. It took four years to finished (1844). That time the City Magistrate C. K Robinson was the architect.
Before Metcalfe Hall announced a heritage building, The Asiatic Society’s Annex Building is located at the ground floor of Metcalf Hall Kolkata. And the 1st floor is occupied by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI). A small museum with the photographs of Archeological Surveys of India’s conservation project in West Bengal and eastern India.
In 1830 Dwarka Nath Tagore established the first public library in Calcutta, in the home of “Strong Sahib”, at Dharmatala. Later it was transferred to Fort William. In 1835 Governor-General Sir Charles Metcalfe took the initiative of set up a house in the style of Greek Temple of Athens.
In 1844 the house was built and named Metcalfe Hall. Metcalfe brought about 4500 books from Fort William and several personal collections. He established the Calcutta public library from this collection. In 1903 Lord Curzon rename this library called Imperial library. After independence, it was renamed the National Library India on Alipur Belvedere road in 1st February 1953.
This building divided into two parts, 1st floor became an office of the Asiatic Society. They preserve the collection of foreign journal and manuscript. Another floor is the office of the Archeological Survey of India. Later, the house was renovated with the initiative of ASI and the Ministry of Culture, Govt of India. After, it was opened to the public this (2019) year, and the hall is designed by the theme of “I am Kolkata”. After reopen the place its now one of the popular places in Kolkata.
Recovery of Metcalfe Hall
In 2018, Archaeological Survey of India declared, Metcalfe Hall Kolkata is a heritage place. They decided to renovate Metcalfe Hall to its former glory. But it cannot a library again. They convert this hall as a permanent exhibition space, displaying proud moments of Kolkata.
The Asiatic Society Library occupied the ground floor for preserve journals and manuscripts and the first floor was used as an exhibition hall of Archaeological Survey of India.

In 2018, they started work to build an exhibition hall with use of the theme “I am Kolkata”. It shows the different cultures of the city’s past and present. Along with the traditional parts of our city, they use great technology and idea, which should be appreciated by all. Now the hall design with many attractive things like responsive touch screen, video projections and hundreds of unforgettable photographs of the city. Like Jorasanko Thakurbari and marble palace in Kolkata the hall is very old.

The visiting hours starts from 10.00 am to 05.00 p.m.
Metcalfe Hall Kolkata is open from Tuesday to Sunday.
The hall is closed on Monday.
Metcalfe Exhibition Hall Entry Fee is Zero.

My Holiday story in Metcalfe hall
First, I see, “Alpona” starts from the ground floor staircase to inside the hall approx. 70 miter long. This is amazing.
After entering the hall, you will see the famous hand-drawn rickshaws of old Kolkata.
Then, I see a wonderful thing, a light set up on a frame and the frame shadow makes a beautiful “Alpona”.
After that, I press a button of the audio-visual show via Hand shadowgraphy.
After coming black and white pictures of old Kolkata and renovation work pictures of the hall.
On the way to the first floor, old-time picture of Victoria Memorial Hall across the walls.
The whole wall decorated with posters of old Bengali films, covers of famous Bengali books, literature, poems, dances, songs, plays, movies, theaters, etc.
The First floor
On the first floor, in the first room, I see a boat where a display is placed and it creates a wave of the river.
I am surprised again, many windows were made there and it is decorated with famous pictures, it would look like the windows of Kolkata. And there are many nearly extinct letter box hanging on the wall.
Beside the wall, one of the most iconic cultures of Kolkata’s Durga idol is placed, and our all-time favourite carom board.
There are also pictures of Bengali cuisine, such as shrimp, Hilsa, Biryani, cakes and Tirreti Bazaar chinese food.
After entering another room, I saw a sample of old poems and books.
After that, I see Type-Writer, famous paintings, various types of photo collages, posters of old advertisement, sweet of Parry, the cigarette of Elephant brand, many years old Bengali calendar! Movie photo ad and bio scope sample.
Last, I found a Bengali wedding essential “Topor”. A giant-size “Topor” has been decorated placed nicely.
After seeing so many things in one day I am surprised and, I feel proud of being a Bengali.
Here I want to thank you to those people, who have arranged so many things and decorate for us under one roof.
It’s very easy, reach esplanade metro station and take a bus for Howrah railway station. Get down to Millenium Park. Opposite of Millenium park, Metcalfe hall welcomes you. Another way to visit is to take Howrah Kolkata ferry service and reach Millenium park. Next option is Come to Dalhousie and reach the hall by 10 minutes walk. You can also come from BBD bag circular railway, 10 minutes walking distance from here.

গেট পেরিয়ে ঢুকতেই চোখে পড়বে সারি সারি থাম দিয়ে তৈরি এই অট্টালিকা। এখানে মোট 30 টি থাম আছে। থাম গুলি বেসমেন্ট থেকে সোজা উঠেগেছে একেবারে ছাদ অবধি। মেটকাফ হল পাঁচটি হল ঘর যুক্ত এবং দ্বিতল বিশিষ্ট একটি ঐতিহ্যবাহী ভবন। এই ভবন টি এথেন্সের ‘টেম্পল অব দ্য উইন্ডসের’আদল তৈরি।
১৮৪৪ সালের এর জুন মাসে কোলকাতা প্রথম লাইব্রেরি তৈরি হয় এই মেটকাফ হলেই। তখন এর নাম ছিল পাবলিক লাইব্রেরি।
2018 সালে আর্কিওলজিক্যাল সার্ভে অফ ইন্ডিয়া মেটকাফ হল কে হেরিটেজ বিল্ডিং হিসাবে ঘোষণা করে এবং আর্কিওলজিক্যাল সার্ভে অফ ইন্ডিয়া এটিকে একটি স্থায়ী প্রদর্শনী হল হিসাবে রূপান্তরিত করার সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়।
হলের নিচের তলার ঢোকার সিঁড়ি থেকেই শুরু হয়েছে নিপুন হাতে দেওয়া সুন্দর আল্পনা যা দেখে সকলেই মুগ্ধ হবে।
স্যার চার্লস থিওফিলাস মেটকাফ ছিলেন ভারতবর্ষের একবছরের গভর্নর জেনারেল। সময় টি ছিল ১৮৩৫-৩৬ পর্যন্ত । তবে মেটকাফ হল তৈরির কাজ শুরু হয় ১৮৪০ সালে ১৯ ডিসেম্বর, ড: জেমস গ্রান্ট এই হলের ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর স্থাপন করেন। এই ঐতিহাসিক স্থাপত্যের পরিকল্পনা করেছিলেন সি.কে. রবিনসন। মেটকাফ হল গড়া শেষ হয় ১৮৪৪-এ।
১৯০৩ সালে ৩০th জানুয়ারী মেটকাফ হল এর লাইব্রেরি টি “Imperial Library” তে পরিণত হয়।
পরে 1923 সালে লাইব্রেরিটি এখান থেকে আলিপুর এর বেলভেডিওর এস্টেট এ স্থানান্তরিত করা হয়। যা বর্তমানে ন্যাশনাল লাইব্রেরি নাম পরিচিত। বর্তমানে এখানেও পুরোনো বিল্ডিং টিকে মিউজিয়াম এ পরিণত করা হয়েছে। এবং নতুন ভাষা ভবন বিল্ডিং এ লাইব্রেরি টি কে স্থানান্তরিত করা হয়েছে।
মেটকাফ হল আর্কিওলজিক্যাল সার্ভে অফ ইন্ডিয়ার অধীনস্ত হবার পর “আমি কোলকাতা” এই থিম কাজ শুরু হয়। পুরো হল টিকে ভিতর ও বাইরে থেকে রেনোভেট করে নতুন করে সাজানো হয়েছে।
হল এ ঢুকতেই দেখতে পাবেন পুরোনো কোলকাতা বিখ্যাত, সুসজ্জিত হাতে টানা রিক্সা।
ভিতরে আর কি আছে আসুন দেখে নেওয়া যাক
ভিতরে ঢুকেই দেখতে পেলাম একটি দারুন জিনিস একটি ফ্রেম এর উপর আলো ফেলে কি সুন্দর একটি আল্পনার শেডও তৈরি করা হয়েছে। তারপর বোতাম প্রেস করে হ্যান্ড শ্যাডোওগ্রাফি
মাধ্যমে অডিও ভিজ্যুয়াল শো দেখতে পেলাম। পুরোনো আর নতুন কোলকাতা সাদা কালো ছবি,
ঘুরে ঘুরে ছবি দেখতে দেখতে পৌঁছে গেলাম দোতলার সিঁড়ির কাছে। দোতলায় ওঠার সময় দেখতে পেলাম গোটা দেয়াল জুড়ে সেই সময়ের ভিক্টোরিয়া মেমোরিয়াল হল এর ছবি ।
ওপরের দেয়াল জুড়ে শোভা পাচ্ছে পুরোনো বাংলা ছায়াছবি র পোস্টার, বিখ্যাত বিখ্যাত বাংলা বইয়ের প্রচ্ছদ, সাহিত্য,কবিতা ,নাচ , গান,নাটক, সিনেমা , থিয়েটার এর ছবি।
দোতলার ঘরে প্রথমেই চোখে পড়লো একটি নৌকা একটি বিশাল ডিসপ্লের মাধ্যমে নদীর জলের তরঙ্গ ফুটিয়ে তোলা হয়েছে।
তার পাশে আবার বিস্ময় সেখানে অনেক গুলি জানালা তৈরি করা হয়েছে এবং বিখ্যাত কিছু ছবি দিয়ে সাজানো হয়েছে , দেখে মনে হবে যেন জানালা দিয়ে দেখা যাচ্ছে কোলকাতা আস -পাশ। আর দেয়ালে ঝোলানো আছে লুপ্তপ্রায় লেটার বক্স, আরো কত কি বলে শেষ করতে পারবো না , শুধু দু চোখ ভোরে চেয়ে ই রইলাম ।
তার পশে রাখা আছে কোলকাতা অন্যতম সংস্কৃতির নিদর্শন কুমোরটুলির দূর্গা, আর আছে আমাদের প্রিয় ক্যারাম বোর্ড , চাইলে খেলেও নিতে পারেন।
এছাড়াও আছে বাঙালির বিচিত্র খাদ্যাভ্যাসের ছবি, যেমন চিংড়ি, ইলিশ, বিরিয়ানি , কেক থেকে শুরু করে টেরিটি বাজারের চাইনিস ফুড
আর একটি ঘরে প্রবেশ করার পর দেখতে পেলাম পুরোনো কবিতা ও বই এর নমুনা চলতে চলতে দেখতে পেলাম টাইপ রাইটার, তৎকালীন বিখ্যাত পেইন্টিংস , নানা ধরণের ছবির কোলাজ , আবার কোথাও দেখা যাচ্ছে পুরোনো বিজ্ঞাপন এর পোস্টার,প্যারির মিষ্টি, এলিফ্যান্ট ব্র্যান্ডের সিগারেট , বহু বছরের পুরোনো বাংলা ক্যালেন্ডার ! চলচিত্রের ছবির বিজ্ঞাপন ও বায়োস্কোপ এর নমুনা ।
দেখলাম বাঙালি বিয়ের অপরিহার্য টোপর , বিশাল সাইজ এর একটি টোপর খুব সুন্দর ডেকোরেশন করে সাজানো আছে। এতো কিছু একদিনে দেখার পর সত্যি মাথা কেমন হচ্ছিলো।
আর ধন্যবাদ জানাই তাদের কে যারা আমাদের জন্য এতো কিছু এক ছাদের তলায় সাজিয়ে রেখেছে। সব মিলিয়ে সত্যি নিজেকে বাঙালি বলে গর্ব হচ্ছে।
ভিজিট করার সময়
মেটকাফ হল আসতে হলে ডালহৌসি জিপও আস্তে হবে সেখান থেকে ৫ মিনিট এর হাঁটা পথ। এছাড়াও মেট্রো তে এসপ্ল্যানেড নেমে হাওড়া গামী যেকোনো বাস ধরে পৌঁছে যান শিপিং কর্পোরেশন বা মিলেনিয়াম পার্ক স্টপেজ এ। এছাড়াও চক্র রেল ধরে বি বা দি বাগ স্টেশন হয়েও আস্তে পারেন।
