Why Pay for Decent Health Care?
A hurdle I’m facing as a private health care advocate is the idea that, private advocacy is not covered by insurance. Do I believe that all Americans are entitled to top notch health care? Of course, I do. Should quality health care be covered by insurance? Definitely!! But, the unfortunate reality is, our health care system is in crisis. Everyone I talk to has a horror story about how the medical system cost them. A mistake was made. A loved one wasn’t cared for properly. Prescriptions weren’t monitored properly. Unnecessary surgeries, procedures, treatments, prescriptions cost people their lives everyday. Or maybe worse; NEGLECTED surgeries, procedures, treatments, prescriptions. We can’t blame the doctors who are often given ten minutes a patient. They seldom have time to review a patient’s chart before they enter the exam room. They are beholden to the insurance companies who won’t pay if they disagree with a doctor’s decision. We can’t blame the patient who doesn’t know what they don’t know. They are often emotionally taxed and have difficulty comprehending the multitude of information given to them. Why do we pay a real estate broker? Because the system is too confusing to manage on our own. Why do we pay an accountant to do our taxes? Because the system is too confusing to manage on our own. Why do we pay an attorney? Because the system is too confusing to navigate on our own. And, why would we pay a patient advocate? You guessed it! Because the system is too confusing to navigate on our own!! Your health and life are worth every penny!!
