Title: Great short story to make you think

Review: I actually decided to read this short story because a band I listen to, BTS, created a song and music video based on the concept of this story. I loved the prose, and the message really makes you think. I also recommend reading the author’s notes at the end of the story. Very insightful.

Review: I read this short story when I was a child and I was wreaked by it. I don’t remember exactly what I thought then but I know I kept going back to it.

I lost the book so I decided to buy it again and this time in the original English. It’s still wonderful. We all should read it at least once a year and ask ourselves where do I live? Am I living in Omelas? Did I walk away? Am I trapped inside the cell?

Review: This story is an interesting look at life and what people would do to be happy. The question for the reader is would you live in Omelas and follow the rules, or would you be unable to accept the rules, knowing your happiness depends on the suffering of another, and walk away?

I also found the writing style interesting. It reminded me of the process I go through when planning a story, at least the way the thoughts are organized.

Also, as BTS ARMY, this story sheds some light on their Spring Day music video.

I think this is a great short story for everyone to read if you like a story that makes you think and contemplate life and happiness.

Review: Love this. As said by the author, there are no answers here, only the question & what a question it is. It’s not new & has so many vehicles; Christianity, wars, criminals. I think it’s wonderful because it lays bare what “we” are willing to tolerate for our own comfort. It is timeless as it was written in the 70’s, yet today were see people willing to sacrifice others/themselves for creature comforts. Some we laud, others we recoil from, not wanting to be one of “them”. Dostoyevsky & James wrote about it in the 19th Century & we’ve lived it before & since, I enjoy pondering this seemingly inevitable human condition.

Title: A Beautiful, Philosophical Read!

Review: I hate to be ~that~ teenage girl who only read a work of classic fiction because it was referenced by a popular musician, but it would be a lie to say I’m not. I read this story because the popular kpop boy group BTS referenced it in their “Spring Day” music video, and I’m very glad I did so. Aside from providing some context for the video, it provided a small introduction to both Le Guin’s writing and the philosophy of suffering and happiness.

Would give 6 stars if I could!!!!!

Review: Wow. So much to enjoy, analyze, and apply to life. I have to teach this story! The Foreword and Afterward by UKL, herself, are also fantastic and SO thoughtful. I love the hidden lesson of interpreting a given text as you, the reader, see it. This short story is simultaneously depressing and inspiring. Honestly, it had me tearing up a few times: ah, the misery of humanity — and yet, all that we could be, but at what cost?

Review: This book should be required reading for everyone of all ages! It was simple, yet so poignantly written. It allows the reader to self examine his or her lifestyle and society in such a way as to get to the essence of morality and character by action. How does one rationalize his or her state of being? Who are we really? How often do we justify our own state of opulence and contentment by dehumanizing others? This short story sends a powerful message that people can justify just about any criminal behavior, if they are selfish enough to only think about themselves.
