Is competition a good thing for writers?

Today is November 1st. It is the first day of National Novel Writing Month, better known as #NaNoWriMo. An international online challenge to write a fifty-thousand-word novel in thirty days. This is my seventh time participating. I have ‘won’ just twice.

It bodes the question: are such competitions useful for writers?

Let me be clear before we go any further; I am not talking here about authors whose goals may be more commercial and for whom competition such as best-seller lists…
