The Japanese anime ‘Children Who Chase Their Voices’ hit the cinemas back in 2011 with huge expectations from the fans of ‘Your Name’, another anime movie by Makoto Shinkai.

Both these movies directed by Makoto Shinkai are about young girls and their journey into the land of the dead.

The ‘Children Who Chase Their Voices’ is a real gem for those who love anime. While the story of the much-hyped movie revolves around a young girl entering the world of the dead; the movie itself is a masterpiece of countless wonderful sights and dazzling scenes portrayed through marvellous animations.

One can safely say that he did not mind watching the movie for animations. However, we need to look into further details to see how the movie has performed.

Breaking it all down

I’ll be completely honest …

It’s an incredible movie. But not all of it.

Makoto Shinkai is highly acclaimed to creating marvellous anime movies with highly engaged and deeply involved characters. Characters which portray a real-image of scenes developed for their particular storylines.

The character design and scene composition are very catchy and they engage the viewers with powerful imagery.

In the first look, the movie sets its tone with the story of a young schoolgirl, Asuna who is living in a village. Her mother works as a nurse while her father was no more. So, for Asuna, her mother was everything from her motivation to her inspiration.

Unfortunately, her mother does not have time as she remains busy with her job and hardly finds free time to talk to her daughter. Thus, Asuna has her cat as her companion and best friend on her walks to the nearby hills.

The strong character depiction of Asuna forces the viewers to strongly hold their positions and grip their seats for some amazing storyline and character detailing.

However, Makoto Shinkai had other plans with this anime movie. He did not mould the storyline towards character depiction such as empowerment and motivation. Rather, he played it quite well by turning the story into classical modifications and portraying

I heard a voice telling me to live, embracing the loss. You should have heard it too. It’s the curse that we humans must bear. But I think it’s also… a blessing.” — Shin

Asuna’s father had left a crystal for her and it leads to a real twist in the storyline of the movie.

Through this crystal, Asuna starts hearing some strange voices which are none other than the voices of the dead. From here the story changes and ends with several twists and turns.

The overall experience of this movie is satisfactory as Sinkia adopted a different yet amazing approach to undermine the much-hyped storylines of character portrayal with social issues.

However, there is a huge room for improvement particularly in the ending and Asuna’s part with Shin and her entry in and out of the world of the dead.

Essential Movie Details

By the way… did you know?

  • Featured song in the movie was ‘Hello Goodbye & Hello
  • Known as Journey to Agartha in worldwide
  • The somewhat moderate storyline with little glimpses and room for improvement in several aspects
  • Makoto Shinkai’s previous work includes 5 Centimeters per Second

In The End

Children Who Chase Lost Voices’ adopts an unconventional approach towards storytelling and character portrayal.

It highlights carrying aspects of an unknown world with higher imagery and explanation for everything which exists there. Nevertheless, at some point, the character lost themselves such as the entry Shin in Asuna’s life and the unexpected arrival of signals from the other side of the world on Asuna’s crystal.

Thus, it seems like there is a lot of stuff going on with no relevant boundaries. However, after some time, the movie reclaims its entertaining factor and prominently display each character providing details into its storyline and support for the movie.

Therefore, the overall experience is satisfactory. Besides, there is no doubt on the use of high-definition scenes with a look into and the world of the dead. Thus, an unconventional storyline with amazing animations is what makes this movie a good display of entertainment and graphics.
