The Coen brothers have built an amazing reputation for themselves as a purveyor of great films, and while they have made great films such as ‘The Big Lebowski’, ‘Fargo’ and most recently, ‘The Ballad of Buster Scruggs’, all of which are crowd pleasers.

It is safe to say that none of their works enhances their reputation as master crafters and storytellers the way ‘No Country for Old Men’ did. The 2007 crime-thriller which won four awards at the 80th Academy Awards, including the award for ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director’ is simply a masterpiece with every film element working together to deliver a truly outstanding film that would resonate through the times.

Breaking it all down

I’ll be completely honest …

‘No Country for Old Men’ is an outstanding film that you should watch immediately if you have not.

The film opens with a perfectly executed voice over by the ever reliable Tommy Lee Jones, and this sets the audience up for an amazing experience that is filled with intense moments, great acting, unforgettable characters as well as memorable quotes.

Just as you’d expect in the work of a master storyteller, every part of this film was purposeful and intentional. It must be said that taking the audience on a journey of grit, crime, emotion and violence as seen in this film is not something a lot of filmmakers have been able to master, but I can assure you that no one would feel left behind in this enthralling drama.

I expect you would be drawn into the characters and feel their emotions at every turn, and this includes even the psychotic killer, Anton Chigurh, which was flawlessly interpreted by Javier Bardem.

This film comes with a lot of memorable dialogues and quotes, and the pick of the bunch for me would be when Anton Chigurh asked Carson Wells, the bounty hunter played by Woody Harrelson,

“If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule” — Anton Chigurh

Chigurh asked the cocky Wells this question, just before killing him, in what could be a way of saying: why would you come this far when I was going to kill you?

It’s hard to see a perfect film, but if there was any then ‘No Country for Old Men’ is as good as they come. Although the premise of the story is not entirely original — a psychotic criminal on the run after killing a member of the law enforcement, and being chased by some morally upstanding old cops who can’t seem to come to terms with the modern crime world.

It must be said that Joel and Ethan did a wondrous job by creating amazing and memorable characters that are able to drive this film forward and suspend our disbelief. It must also be said that Anton Chigurh might just be in the top 3 list of the greatest film villains of all time. What a character!
