The Beyond” was released in 1981, as one of the fabricated horror movies directed through Lucio Falci.

The movie turned trendy in parts within the 10 years of time just due to the murder sequences it displayed. Because of these scenes it was heavily censored before its release in the United States in 1983.

The Beyond” revolves around a woman who inherited a hotel that was previously constructed in old times, in Louisiana. After inheriting the hotel the woman later identified sequence of killings as a result of supernatural incidents and, therefore, the woman learned that the hotel is the gateway to hell.

That is how the movie was portrayed to audience over its horror element of hell. Still, there are some other aspects of the movie that need additional observation.

Breaking it all down

I’ll be completely honest …

The movie is beautiful with respect to its story, theme, and character play, especially the movie shows the deep direction given by Fulci.

The direction was so perfect that it seems that Fulci gained happiness out of the horror he produced for the audience because the horror scenes of the movies make it look overwhelming to the emotional sentiments of the audience in terms of horror.

It provides a vintage feel, screaming, acting, epic death scenes, and over-exaggeration of all aspects and elements of the movie make it appealing and beautiful and especially the portrayal of all characters involved within the display of the movie.

“Woe be unto him who opens one of the seven gateways to Hell, because through that gateway, evil will invade the world.” — Cinzia Monreale

In 1996, Fulci died, but before his death he has made some other horror-based movies that have paved the way for modern day horror movies.

Fulci made “Zombie” and “Don’t Torture the Duckling.” In addition, the movie completely shows the most effective for of genre work just because of the direction and role played by characters of the movie.

The horrific elements of the movie has made the movie appealing and watchable in all respects, especially the horror scenes where tarantulas eat eyeballs that typically shows the way one can be terrified and amused by such horrific elements.

Therefore, it would not be wrong to say that the movie is not a disappointment instead it has effectively made the horrific elements as appealing as in any other non-horror movie of the time and still today.

Essential Movie Details

By the way… did you know?

  • It was created with only a $400,000 budget and made in Italy
  • It’s a “ Southern Gothic” supernatural horror film
  • Lucio Fulci directed the movie along with other horror movies like “Zombie” and “Don’t Torture the Duckling.”
  • Catriona MacColl was the leading actress of the movie who also acted in many other horror movies like “City of the Living of the Dead”, and “The House by the Cemetery.”

In The End

It would not be wrong to conclude that the movie has a clear portrayal of gothic supernatural horror elements throughout the display of the movie.

It would also not be wrong to say that I liked the movie as it is one of the displays of most horrific elements produced by Lucio Fulci like he successfully did in other movies of the time like “Zombie” and “Don’t Torture the Duckling.”

However, still, I would like to recommend that there are many other pieces of horror movies available to watch and I personally recommend to watch the “Wrong Turn” horror movie series so that one can actually observe the true meaning of being horrified by a movie.
