The strangers are in the house. There are knives and hands are being tied down. She’s pleading for her life.

The camera is in black and white and the opening scene of the film has Tate (Hilary Duff) being interviewed. She is describing the scene above, a dream she has had about her own death.

This interview scene is taken from actual footage of Sharon Tate. There is also another interview from the will be killer of Sharon Tate. They’re both from the same day, which happened to be Sharon Tate’s wedding.

This story is real.

If that isn’t morbid of an opening scene, there is footage from the real crime scene. There is death, blood and fear. The opening to this movie sets the stage for the rest of the movie.

Breaking it all down

I’ll be completely honest…

For me, it was a failure of imagination.

The stage was set great at the beginning. However, it was painful to see something like this about something so historic that literally changed the entire nation. The thing which is more painful is that because Tate constantly dreams of her death, we have to see the murders again and again in graphic knife-stabbing and blood-spattering detail.

Tate finds the will to continue fighting as she dreams of her death over and over. There is an aspect of dignity and fighting to change destiny. She tries to fight off the would be murders as they attack her and her friends. This leads to scenes of repetition and less than “thrilling” cinematography.

“Is life a random series of circumstances or is there some greater plan?” — Daniel Farrands

The characters have no personalities, no inner lives, no real relationship to one another. The film is appalling in a lot of ways, the dialogues are too heavy handed and the characters are talking about fate and chance, portraying what Tate could have done that night.

It is a set of bogus premonitions and the ending of the film is even more horrible than the film itself. It’s a failure of morality and imagination.
This was bound to happen when you mix something fictional as ‘what if’ to something so historic which has changed the lives and thinking of so many.

Essential Movie Details

By the way… did you know?

  • Hillary Duff won the worst actress award at the Golden Raspberry Awards 2020
  • The film received great controversy for starring Hillary
  • This movie received a 2.8/10 on IMDB
  • Although she received a hefty amount of criticism she still won an award for best actress at Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival Awards

In The End

The film was an overall disappointment for me considering the fact that the directors and producers decided to make a movie on something so historic in the history of America.

The element of fiction is used horribly in this movie which horrifies the viewers. It is a very pathetic portrayal of the gruesome events that took place in the late 1960’s.

I think it was obvious that the audience would be terrified to see the blood spattering events again and again like shown in the movie, the movie overall portrays the question “what if?” things had been different and different steps were taken the night of the murders.

For me, it was a disastrous mix of horror and fiction which I think is clearly visible. It did not do justice to Tate or any of her friends from that night.
