Young couple Emily and Alex were from Seattle. They’ve just moved to Los Angeles with their son.

One day at a park, they meet eccentric fellow parents Kurt and Charlotte. Soon, the two families join each other for a family playdate.

‘The Overnight’ is actually the perfect title for this movie. The night goes well and both couples begin forming an unlikely friendship. But the real story begins when the kids fall asleep. After putting them to bed, the parents continue the evening.

With Kurt and Charlotte’s encouragement, both couples loosen up more. The party keeps going fueled by drugs and lots of alcohol. ‘The Overnight’ is a comedic story about friendship that young parents will definitely relate to on some level.

Breaking it all down

I’ll be completely honest …

I thought this was just going to be just another typical indie sex comedy. At least, that’s the vibe you get by watching the trailer and reading about it online.

I was wrong.

“I think we’ve reached that point in the evening where we should leave before anything crazy happens” — Emily

Thankfully, sex isn’t the main focus of this film. Instead, writer/director Patrick Brice has done a great job keeping the story character-driven. And he’s done a great job building those characters, too.

Sure, there are some sex scenes in The Overnight. They might even make some viewers cringe a little. But more importantly, this movie lets you witness the characters’ humanity.

Their fears, their insecurities, and their life experiences. That’s what makes the characters relatable. But then, we get to see them let their guard down and slowly open up. To me, that kind of character development is where the script truly shines.

Kurt and Charlotte are the eccentric couple that’s wild and free. Emily and Alex are their opposite, in many ways. But together, the chemistry between these two pairs is what keeps you watching.

The movie only runs for about 79 minutes. Yes, that’s shorter than many mainstream films. However, this seems to be the perfect length for ‘The Overnight’.

The storyline revolves around the events of a single night. And, for the most part, it only focuses on one main location.

No spoilers here! The ending of ‘The Overnight’ feels warm and fuzzy. It’ll definitely make you happy that the two couples crossed paths in the first place.

Essential Movie Details

By the way… did you know?

  • The film was filmed in only 12 days at the home of comedian Adam Carolla
  • It was written and directed by Patrick Brice who’s known for directing thrillers like Creep and Creep 2
  • Adam Scott (who plays Alex) and Jason Schwartzman (Kurt) have acted together on TV series Parks and Recreation
  • For the sex scenes, the male actors wore prosthetic penises

In The End

The Overnight is definitely worth watching.

Personally, I’m not a parent. Still, it’s obvious that this movie will resonate strongly among viewers with kids. This is especially true for young couples who are still adjusting to parenthood.

Is this the kind of movie you’ll want to watch repeatedly? Well, maybe not. There’s an air of mystery to this film when you first hear about it. In part, this is thanks to how the trailer looks. The mystery surrounding ‘The Overnight’ is what makes it pretty intriguing. But once you get past the first viewing and you understand what’s going on, the mystery fades away.

I would still rewatch it, though. The jokes still make me laugh. And to be honest, I am a huge fan of storylines with the great chemistry you see between Alex and Emily with Kurt and Charlotte.

If you’ve seen and enjoyed ‘While We’re Young’ (2014) starring Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts you’ll enjoy ‘The Overnight’, and vice versa.
