These aren’t funny.

The results were about as incomprehensible to me as regular ICD-10 codes.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, although I once trained to be a lawyer. Do not treat any of this information as medical, legal, or writing advice.

Previously, I trained an A.I. to generate British placenames. The results were predictable and hilarious.

Method

Use the same method as I trained an A.I. to generate British placenames, but use CMS.gov’s 2016 ICD-10-CM and GEMs as training data instead of British places.

There are a lot of ICD-10 codes, so don’t run this on a Mac, use something that has proper CUDA support. I had to leave my Mac running overnight to train the models.

Results

Look at 1,000,000 characters worth of generated ICD codes (~11,900 codes) and despair.

Appendix A (below) contains a hand-picked sample of generated codes.

Conclusion

ICD-10 codes, whether real or generated by a neural network, are not as funny as British placenames.

Appendix A

A hand-picked sample of generated codes from the complete list of generated ICD-10 codes.
