I don’t quite blame him for not having done a film in the last 25 years, particularly the last 15, when most Hollywood films pander to franchises (mainly the overrated masculine Comic Con genre) and excessive violence and pyrotechnics (ie The Expendables, or Action/Espionage genres) and CGI. Don’t get me wrong, there are some films with CGI that is necessary, like the recent Ghostbusters film with Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Melissa McCarthy. I prefer a good movie without advanced technology, such as Room. Even animation is all done on computers now. I mean, I couldn’t tell if Frozen was a Pixar movie or a standard Disney movie as the over-use of tones and the very similar facial expressions usually seen in a Dreamworks or Pixar animated movie foregoes the golden era of Disney animation when they were done on cels — my favourite Disney movies (ie Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, The Rescuers, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Aristocats). We need the classic cinema back. The Artist, Philomena, Dallas Buyers’ Club and Room are some of the only great films released in the last five years not to pander to the three aforementioned earlier.
