Hey there, what’s going on guys! It’s me Nigel and I’m back here again with another sneaker review for you! In today’s article, I am going through the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 review.
These sneakers were actually released quite a while back but they are in my opinion one of the more underrated sneakers today.
AND THAT is why I’m here to introduce them to you guys!
Just a brief overview of the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66…
Believe it or not, these low cut lifestyle sneakers were released almost 10 years ago and yet, they still remain an essential footwear with it’s timeless look.
Over the years, Onitsuka Tiger has released many other sneakers but the Mexico 66 remains as one of its greatest success.
And that is not without reasons, which I’m here to share today!
Having rocked (and still rocking) these sneakers for almost 2 years now, I aim to give an unbiased and honest opinion on the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66.
Without further ado, lets dive right into the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 review…
1. Features of the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66
As usual, we’ll kick start this review with the features of the sneaker
Upper
The upper of this sneaker is primarily made of high quality leather with a suede overlay at the toe box and heels (see below). This adds contrast to the sneaker, which does make it look more stylish.
As mentioned, I have used these sneakers for almost 2 years now so slight creases can be observed up close! A new pair would definitely look way cleaner!
With an overlay of material on the upper, the sneaker can be a little stiff when you just wear them. This made it a little uncomfortable in the beginning but after a couple of wears, the sneaker felt more ‘loosen up’ so the discomfort was gone as well.
At the sides, the signature Onitsuka Tiger Logo is boldly stitched on using additional layers of leather. Being a totally different colour, the design here looks absolutely stunning.
And this is actually the main reason I love the mexico 66 — its bold and amazing design
With all the layering going on at the upper, you may be worried about the breathability of the sneaker, especially since it’s leather too. Thankfully, the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 feels as airy as any other lifestyle sneaker, which actually came as a surprise to me too!
Midsole and Insole
The Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 has a thin rubber midsole, similar to most lifestyle sneakers.
One problem I had with this sneaker however was its thinner than usual insole. This results in less support and cushioning on the soles which definitely could be improved.
What I did to solve this was to simply insert an additional insole. This provides the lacking support which enhances the overall comfort.
Outsole
As you can see above, the outsole pattern kind of already gives away that it is pretty durable.
And that is indeed the case.
Having used these sneakers for almost 2 years now, you can see that the condition on the outsole still looks amazing, proving it’s great durability.

2. Comfort
Like other lifestyle sneakers, this sneaker provides decent comfort to the feet but frankly speaking nothing special.
As mentioned earlier, the sneaker might feel a little rigid in the beginning and thus require some breaking in. But after which, the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 feels pretty much like any other lifestyle sneaker.
Given it’s slim and compact nature, another flaw it has is also the lack of cushioning along the sneaker collar due to minimal padding. This would usually result in a less comfortable fit around the ankles but is easily resolved by the snug leather hugging your ankles
Overall, the comfort level of these sneakers may not be the best but they do give a fairly comfortable experience.

3. Style
The Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 is one of my go-to sneakers for lifestyle use.
And it’s probably not hard to figure out why!
It’s slim appearance and bold design makes it a perfect match for almost all outfits and occasions. Whether you’re wearing these for a chill day out or in a more formal setting, you can trust that these sneakers will not disappoint you.
My #1 choice is to wear these with slim jeans but Bermudas or long pants work decently well too!
Of course, the style will depend on the colourway you’re getting too!
The Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 also comes in a wide variety of colourways and there are even slip on versions released in recent years! With all these choices available, you are sure to find a pair that fits your preference!

4. Size
Sizing wise, the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 runs true to size so I went with my usual US 9 which fits perfectly! Hence, I would recommend the same for you too!
Those of you with wider feet can also consider going half size up on these as they do have a narrower shape.
To put things into perspective, I’m wearing US 9 for shoes like the Adidas Ultra Boost and Nike Flyknit Racer, and US 8.5 for shoes like the Adidas NMD and Nike Air Force 1.

5. Cost
Given that these sneakers are made with high quality leather and detailed stitching, it is understandable that the retail price is slightly steep at around $110.
Thankfully, as these sneakers have been released for quite a while now, prices have largely dropped and most fashion retailers offer them at great discounts for as low as $70.
Online marketplaces like Amazon also have these at great deals too!
I will say any pair below $90 is already a decent buy. Given the high quality of these sneakers and their amazing look, they are damn heck worth your every penny!
6. Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 Review — Summary of Pros and Cons
PROS:
- Amazing design that can complement most outfits
- High quality material
CONS:
- Upper is stiff in the beginning and thus require some breaking in
- Insufficient cushioning on the soles
7. Final Words
The Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 are one of my favorite lifestyle sneakers which I think should belong in every guy’s wardrobe.
With its sleek and bold design, it is a sneaker that will never go out of trend and will remain stylish for many years to come.
If you’re looking for an affordable pair of lifestyle sneaker that is easy to match and timeless, you can’t do any worst than going with the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66.
