The majority of states do not ask voters to register as members of any specific party. In some states, party registration is a separate step; in others, voters are regarded as members if they vote for candidates from that party in a specific election — until the next election.

This is confusing. People should be loyal to their own party. How could we say that one person should belong to a specific party when he happens to have voted a certain party?
