Opioid Awareness

12/13/17: Final Expansion

I couldn’t find better statistics so I kept the same and changed some colors up

12/6/17: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Get a tagline

2. “This is what I think”

  • I’m going to better show what I want

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Everything

12/6/17: Expansion Ideas

So I decided to use my opioid awarness as one of my 2 projects to expand on. I wanted to do a magazine ad but it started developing into something I’d see on social media so I think that is going to be my direction. I’d like to make A Facebook ad, a website banner, and a spot for their website sticking towards their style so it’s recognizable.

This a very rough looking poster thing I made

11/29/17: Critique notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Change the statistics to be more about clean-ness

2. “This is what I think”

  • I really like the way they turned out and think those minor changes are definitely needed

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Change the statistics

11/27/17: Final

Rationale: Opioid Awareness

For my opioid awareness product, I decided to take feminine body was and make the focus women, since they have a higher climbing demographic. Bath and body works is well known of body products store so I used them as my inspiration. I really liked their plain, newer look on some of the body wash so I went with that and added a pill, a needle, and a snorting straw as graphics and stuck with the colors relating to the type of scent. The large numbers are the statistics and the initial eye catcher. Helvetica Neue is the logo font and the rest of the type is Mr. Eves XL OT and it’ sprinted on a 80lb bright white paper.

What Works:

1. I really like them, they turned out ok and printed nicely

2. Colors work well

3. It looks well done

Need Help:

1. Do they work or should I update again?

11/20/17: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • It’s not much different

2.” This is what I think”

  • I didn’t really focus on this for this week because I kinda forgot about it while focusing on starpack so It wasn’t anything spe and I don’t have a whole lot to go off of

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Try my best

11/20/17: 2nd “Final”

Here are the physical labels. I tried playing with pills in the illustration but I’m not sure it’s working so I’m going to work out some stuff and go from there.

11/15/17: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Update the imagery

2.” This is what I think”

  • It’s needs some revamping so that’s what I’ll do

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • See above

11/15/17: 1st Finish

I made one label to see if the design was working before I moved to more. I decided to play off of the euphoric feeling you get so I made the Lavender a bit fuzzier and I tried to play off of the bath and body works labels but instead of “honey” it says Hydrocodone to kind of catch your eye and make you go “huh?” I wasn't sure about how to do the pill illustration so i tried to make hydrocodone out of pills but it doesn't show and looks a little out of place so unless someone likes it, i think i’m going to nix it. The type is a little small in areas but overall I’m not disappointed.

11/10/17: Read and Response pt 2

Unfortunately, I was unable to photograph my bottle before I left for Kentucky for the weekend so I will have this soon!

11/8/17: Critique Note

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Play with the name

2.” This is what I think”

I like the idea of the pill photo thing so I’ll play around with that

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Add the pills

11/8/17: Initial Layouts

“Keeping Clean off Opioids”

I had decided to do three different body washes so I went to the store for body washes, Bath & Body Works! I chose three scents, French Lavender and Honey, Cucumber Melon, and Mango Mandarin.

These are obnoxiously large

I have two initial layouts! I used Lavender for the trial and made a label set that was sort of similar to what they normally go for and one that has a bit of an older feel to it with some illustrative elements.

The first one looks way too purple on my screen, It’s more muted than shown

Here are the bottles I’m using since I’m not a fan of bath and body works bottle shapes and these also all three and a $1 donation to cancer research still were less than one bottle. Plus they were super cute and fit the colors although they are hand soaps and the green one isn’t cucumber melon

10/23/17: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • The idea works well

2. “This is what I think”

  • I agree, the body wash was the best idea and I’m excited to move forward with it

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Make body wash!

10/25/17: Idea Board + Read and Response

Boards in the order as specified below
  1. “How does it grab attention?”
  • I want it to have an interesting shape and bright colors which they sometime have but with a simple and fun design that still shows awareness

2. How is it effectively directed at the target?”

  • My target is adults and what not so they’ll like the simple design that also raises awareness and donates to them

3. “How is the concept on strategy?”

  • Strategically it’s “keeping clean” with three different options

4. “How is it benefit oriented?”

  • They get a product and a certain amount of money can go to the opioid awareness place

5. “How does it support the brand?”

  • Unsure

6. “What is the call to action?”

  • Unsure

10/24/17: Idea Options

I really like the idea of “Staying clean” so I focused on that with three different options

  • Toothpaste/Mouthwash/Toothbrush (Everyone)

This was my choice because I researched the “warning signs” that someone is on opioids can have bad hygiene so I thought this was a good way to focus towards everyone staying clean…Literally and Figuratively. I’m going to focus on

Some research: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3164783/

10/21/17: Read/Response

  • I feel like I am relatively lucky, I’ve never been directly effected by opioid abuse. I grew up in a nasty town where drugs were obviously around, but I never associated with anyone who did hard drugs and I feel like thats helped me in the long run.

Starpack

12/13/17: Nice Photos

11/29/17: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Craft could be better

2. “This is what I think”

  • It is a little plain and I had a very difficult time building it so u must figure out what I can do to fix it

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Update the craft

11/27/17: Final

Rationale: Starpack — Brief A: The Future of the Milk Bottle

For my milk bottle, I decide to get a little historical and use on old milk tin form, which they used in the early days to store the milk. I added a little metal handle to add to that feeling and to help with pouring/holding. For the label I printed it in a yellow tinted paper stock to simulate age and kept to the normal milk colors and used red for whole milk. The type is set in Futura. The “Bates farm and dairy” logo is a dairy in the UK that I thought might help to add.

What works:

1. I think the label looks relatively nice

2. I have good information

3. Colors work

Need help:

1. I need confirmation that it looks ok?

11/20/17: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • It’s too big

2. “This is what I think”

  • I agree that I need a better jug form and to update my forms a little

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Update it all

11/20/17: Finish

I made a silo looking jug to simulate a farm for my fresh milk. I made a sort of older label, and older being kinda 60’s/70’s-ish.

11/12/17: 2nd Final

I’m a mess and wasn’t in class but…

For my Starpack I liked the historical idea so I went for a more retro idea and I want to place it on an old milk can shape, one they used to store the milk in way back when. I tried making a from and it didn’t go very well so here is a picture of what I want:

11/6/17: Critique Notes/Read and Response

Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Going for an older feel?

2. “This is what I think”

  • It needs some tlc and some revamping but i have my ideas and I think I can move forward well

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Make a better bottle form

Read and Response

  • I think this is photographed
  • I think this is a mock
  • This is a photo
  • Pretty sure this is a photo
  • This is a photo

11/6/17: First Final

I think I may have figured out what I’m doing with my life. I’m going with the neat shaped bottle (like the pink one below) but add a little handle for easier holding. I am unsure if we are to make a line of them but if I do, I plan to change the flowers with colors for the type of milk (whole, 2%, 1%) and the flowers themselves for milk flavors (strawberry, chocolate, etc).

Some doodles
My labels I made and the bottle template

10/30/17: Sorta Layouts

I have no idea what I'm doing. Thats why they are so plain. I was absent and do not have critique notes.

10/23/17: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Apothedairy?

2. “This is what I think”

  • I’m glad everyone agreed that the sophisticated bottle idea was the strongest and I’m excited to move forward with it.

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Figure out the best way to combine elegance and something fun

10/23/17: Idea Board

First one is research, other two are ideas

10/22/17: Idea Options

  • * Brief A- The Future Milk Bottle *

Normal milk bottles don’t look any different so this sounds really fun

Jolly Pumpkin

12/13/17: Bottle Revisions

So made a bunch of revisions (but not the color stupid medium is showing) to my labels….as in they are completely different. I like them so much better and I’m quite happy with how they are now.

Medium can’t ever get colors right

12/6/17: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”

Beer bottles

  • Much better illustration

Pack

  • Idea is good

2. “This is what I think”

  • I’m much happier with how they are coming along and I’m glad I decided to revise this project instead of the other ones.

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Finish all four labels

12/6/17: Expansion Ideas

Jolly Pumpkin was the second idea I decided to expand on I liked the promp the most but It had felt like my weakest project. I decided to approach the illustrations differently. I used illustrator more than I used photoshop this time and I think they turned out 10x better. So, for the box idea I wanted to go with a box tht showed all four at once instead of in a square. I was sorta givn the idea to make a book-like box since The Four Horsemen is a biblical reference, so it fits the idea.

Death’s label and the rough box
Here’s a little moodboard I did when I decided to expand this one

10/18/17: Rationale

Jolly Pumpkin — “Four Horsemen”

For my labels, I decided to go with the concept “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.” I decided to focus on the horses since they are the main reason for the colors. I added in the “weapon” element to further show the relation. For the logo rebranding, I tried to focus mostly on the JP with the little pumpkin element to be different. The filigree elements fit in with some of the older logos but also relate to the labels. All of it is supposed to have a darker feel that’s fits in with the Jolly Pumpkin Brewery.

10/18/17: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Too simple

2. “This is what I think”

  • I started to go backwards with my project. I like the second final so much better so I need to figure out how to combine this final and the continuity that it has with the better shapes and more attractive illustrations. I have a lot more ambitions with it than I showed. I’m becoming burnt out at the middle of the semester which isn’t good and need to give myself more time for homework and myself.

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Casually work on it

10/16/17: Final Final

Well they are done and turned in! This for sure might be the project I work on the most after the fact. I’m better with casual timelines so I’m really hoping to work on and improve this one since I was really excited about the project when I heard about it.

10/12/17: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Work on contrast

2. “This is what I think”

  • Everything needs to be simplified and smaller

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Simplify and update

10/9/17: Second Final

10/6/17: Read and Response

These are the ones I liked the most

I really enjoyed looking through the beer labels and there were many that i like but I chose one or two from each article to post about. I like the shapes and patterns and I thought they would be helpful to look at when helping design mine.

10/2/17: Critique notes

Top notes are From Sarah M, Bottom three are from Nikki
Notes from Bridgette
  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Focus on just the horseheads so illustrations are easier?

2. “This is what I think”

  • I definitely like the idea of making ridiculously large illustrations because it’s not my forte and I was just experimenting and I’m ready to move back to the drawing board (literally). I’ll also iron out my logo

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Get the designs narrowed down

10/2/17: First set of bottles

Missing just the main illustration but here’s the general design!

10/1/17: Illustrations

As of now this is what I have for drawing. These take MUCH longer than I anticipated since I have a bit of perfectionist in me.

^ these are going to be the ornamental frames for each and this ^ is Conquest

9/29/2017: Question Responses

  1. “Current logo problems”

I think the current logo looks a little outdated to me, maybe a little busy too. Some of the logos don’t match, like the one on the bottles primarily looks like it was redone but they left the rest to kind of rot (get it, because they’re pumpkins?). I assume that’s why we’re doing the refresh.

2. “Content”

I’m pretty sure everything is on there. I have the artisan ales, the date, ‘sour’, so I think we’re good

3. “Incorporate existing brand”

I think I stuck with the feel of it, I used the pumpkin and tried to use a font similar to some of the ones they’ve used. I think maybe if the pumpkin was bigger it would look more like theirs.

4. “How is concept communicated?”

  • I think It will clearly show its for beer, just with a dark twist to it

9/26/2017: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”

Unfortunately, I do not have any crit notes to offer. I was not in class because I sprained my knee doing the most mundane thing right before class and it was hard to walk on (and drive with).

2. “This is what I think”

  • My drawings need finished so when I get those done, I can properly show the ideas going on in my head.

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Finish my illustrations

9/25/17: Finalizations

I made two drawings based off of what people said about my other JP logo. One has the changes of the words and the better fitting font, the other is a mix of the J and the P together.

I personally like the first one

For the labels…well, they are very rough because I wanted to illustrate them, either hand or digitally and I haven’t finished them yet so I have rough designs playing with the label shape, stand in text, and stand in photos.

I like the half round one and the filigree one

The one on my bottle has a small drawing since i’m not obviously using the thing that i found and will probably make one myself, It’s just an idea.

9/24/17: Inspiration

I looked around to find images that commonly depicted the four horsemen as their respected suit, or at least showed their color and common objects so I could take into account what was necessary to depict each horseman. I’m currently stuck between a more comic/cartoon/illustrative style I found for the conquest one or a painted style. I haven’t been able to play around to much with them since my weekend was so busy.

The stars are the two styles I like the most

I looked around for some label ideas and I like the idea of shapped labels, not just completely rectangular so I want to mess around with that.

my label inspirations

9/18/17: Crit notes

  1. “This is what I heard”

Beer bottles

  • Unify the colors or make sure to unify them with typefaces or something

Logo

  • The logo has an irish pub feel

2. “This is what I think”

  • The Filigre is a bit out of place with the Letter design I used so I’m going to play around a bit more with it and for the beer, I agree that the colors don’t necessarily match together but it works best for the horses. I’ll play with a few common colors

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Get the designs narrowed down

9/17/17: Jolly Pumpkin Research and stuff

Research: I’ve spent many hours searching around their website and Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales was brought to life by “Captain Spooky” Ron Jefferies and his wife in 2004, but he had been brewing beer since 1991. The logo and the name were created because of his love for Halloween and beer. They have several different locations-

  • Traverse City, MI; Restaurant, Brewery, Distillery

They make their own beer, obviously, but at certain restaurants they also offer other beers, wines, and hard liquors. They have a wide variety of sour bíers and have seasonal and specialty brews they come out with every so often.

Photos from their website or places from michigan, etc.

Concept: For the four pack of beer I decided to base mine off of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. After looking through all the beers and nixing my other few ideas, I thought this might be the most visually appealing idea since there are several different ways to go about it. I picked different beers for each horsemen based off of what I thought might be best:

  • Death: For death I chose Noel de Calabaza because of it’s 9% alcohol content which is the highest out of all of them.
I spelled Apocalypse wrong. My B. Fonts may change, couldn’t find the right one.

Open and Play

12/13/17: Nice Photos

10/18/17: Rationale

Open and Play — “Par for the Course”

For my project, I decided to package golf balls and add in a built in score card. My box goes well for school golf clubs, mini tournaments, country clubs, casual games, etc. The golf balls sit nicely inside the folded score card, pencil included, and once you take them out you can set them on top of the box and it can either be the holder or if you don’t have access to golf tees, it can be a good back-up.

2. “This is what I think”

3. “This is what I am going to do”

10/18/17: Final Final

It’s done! I’m quite content with it, I think the change in paper brought out the colors better but not too much, everything fits nicely, and nothing ripped (yet)!

10/12/17: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Fix typo

2. “This is what I think”

  • I really like how my project looks so I’m stingy with changing it but It does have some final tweeks and a typo I need to fix.

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Change my paper

10/11/17: Second Final

Here are the digital versions of my box! I didn’t make too make too many changes since I was pretty happy with the front and the color scheme. Also, I found my golf balls! :D

Colors off, like usual

10/6/17: Read and Response

After watching the videos, I think I have a better understanding of building my box. Right now, It is incredibly rough and I’m impressed that it stayed together so long but I’ve managed to decide that how i did it…is obviously not how I’m going to do it for the final.

10/4/17: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Change around some colors, like working more with the orange

2. “This is what I think”

  • The scorecard is quite hard to read as is a lot of text so i need to fix that

3. “This is what I am going to do”

  • Fix the text

10/4/17: Final 1

9/29/17: Critique Notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • The name needs to be bigger

2. “This is what I think”

  • I think I got a lot of good comments and I have a lot to go off of. I like the idea of playing with the grass and I do like the orange. I might add some more illustrative elements to it.

3. “This is what I am going to do’

  • Narrow down a pattern and what not for it

9/27/17: Updated box

3 rough drafts:

There are die cuts there, I just needed the overflow for cutting and folding purposes and didn’t make a clipping mask for some of it (colors are off too)

Printed and mocked:

9/20/17: Crit notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • My ideas are pretty ok

2. “This is what I think”

  • I do think a new name would be great, one a little more fitting

3. “This is what I am going to do’

  • Well, I need to change the size of my box to fit all three golf balls and definitely do a re-name. A re-name might mean a new set of thumbnails.

9/20/17: First product draft

With the first draft of my packaging, here is my box template and it brought to life. I plan to use the bottom half that holds the golf balls as the score card that is dry erasable and comes with a small marker to use as the score card and the little holes that show the golf balls, you’ll be able to sit them on top of the box and hit them off of it in case you lose/forget/run-out of tees.

Paper mock

I made some poorly drawn box ideas. I pretty much have an idea I’m hyper focused on doing so there wasn’t much more to do except sorta show what I was doing with the actual box itself.

I tried

For the content, I kinda just want to pull the information off the back of the golf ball box I bought since that’s probably the best bet to make sure it’s accurate. Probably just add in that the box doubles as a score card.

9/19/17: Box idea and late mood boards

So I hadn’t uploaded my mood boards because I had changed what i wanted to do actually in the middle of crit so I hadn’t had proper ones so I made a very small paint one and changed my tennis ball thing to golf balls so I did one on that.

Golf mood board

For this idea, I wanted to combine a sports ball with a scoreboard or scorecard, not because I play sports obviously, but I know sometimes people play competitively and this is a way to practice competitively or have a fun competition with your friends. I started off wanting to use tennis balls but was told that they needed vacuum sealed so I changed it to another small ball which is a golf ball. My product would be good for school golf clubs(ha, puns) or driving ranges/country clubs. This one worked out the best.

paint mood board

My goal with my paint and pallet set was to make something that doubled as a pallet and the paint storage. I wanted to combine them because more often that not, you have to buy them separately and with small paints or paints more for kids, that was an after thought so Combining them sounded like a fun idea.

poorly drawn original ideas

9/18/17: Open and Play questions

  1. “Keep it simple”

The top three things I want to communicate with my packaging is to have fun, keep playing, and usefulness.

2. “Think outside the box”

I think my box stands out from all the others because Its small and simple and functions much more than just a storage box like all the others.

3. “Keep it mysterious”

The main things that need to be on the box is the title and the golf ball information, so I do have a little wiggle room with play, even if the box is small.

4. “Think about longevity”

I don’t think my product is gimicky, it’s just golf balls that have a scorecard. I think its “timelessness” comes with its ability to be reused a bunch, until you lose the balls, that is.

5. “Consider your customer”

My packaging offers three purposes actually! It is a golf ball package, a score card, and a ball stand if necessary.

6. “Be sustainable”

I think I should find a way to not have to tape it together. Then the whole box will be useful without unnecessary adhesives.

7. “Tell your story”

I’m using golf balls, so I’m not sure of its story. I’m trying to make something that could be sold in stores for golfers who want to practice competitively, golf clubs (ha) to use for their members to play, etc.

8. “Go beyond your brand”

Well there are several golf ball manufacturers and none make a useful box so one point to me!

9. “Showcase your product”

I have three holes that you can see the golf ball in, its also where they would sit if you needed to use the box as the tee.

9/13/17: Crit notes

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Paint idea will be hard to do since cardboard will not be able to withstand constant washings

2. “This is what I think”

  • I agree that I should have thought the paint thing through a little better and I should have done some more research. I might end up moving around some ideas and going from there.

3. “This is what I am going to do’

  • I plan to stick with the scoreboard box

9/12/17: Open and Play Ideas

Things I came up with (star for 2 chosen ideas):

  • Game board from a Mac ‘n cheese box

9/11/17: Photographing work assignment

1.) My experience with photographing my work is a little lacking. I have previously photographed work but I’m currently in photo and it would probably look much better now than what it has. My strengths are that I’m able to get a good angle and it does look pretty decent but my weaknesses would have to be the white balance and it not looking professional. I’m currently in Photo 1 so I feel like that will help me to take better photos.

2.) The information I found most helpful was the sections on lighting. I’ve briefly dealt with lighting but it could use some improvements.

3.) I definitely agree with the addition of props and stylistic choices. You’re best bet to stay away from the copying trends is to do what you think looks best. Play around with your own ideas and if you think you’ve seen it before, look it up.

9/6/17: In class assignment

  1. For the “successful packaging” I assume we were going with main stream items so, even though its not a commonly picked one, I went with Ben and Jerry’s. I felt it had a lot in common with what the article was talking about since its very well know visually, kids could easily identify it, its the only one like it, etc. The only thing it doesn’t really embody would probably be the simple section since its a bit busier.
(sorry for tiny image)
  1. For my first pick from the list, I went with “For Your Baby.” I thought the idea of it also doubling as blocks was brilliant because it can help you keep your child busy while in the tub or during feeding time, etc. I think it fits well with-in the frames of the article. It’s simple, it could easily be identified, it stands out against competitors, etc.
  1. I went with dream car for my next one because it was both a nice, clean design and the product inside looked really cool. I think it fits the aspects of the article. It’s simple, it stands out, it could easily be identified, etc.

#WeStandTogether

12/13/17: Nice Photos

9/11/17: Box is complete

After some tedious pen tool-ing, I made better illustrations. I also removed the deep backgrounds for a more lighter feel. I replaced the “hand writing” side with the “love” I made out of hands. She’s ready to be turned in! I also made a box of just the pattern since everyone likes it.

Outside
Inside
mock ups (the colors got changed here)!

9/6/17: Box 2.0

My box is all put together and ready for crit!

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Pattern is loved, maybe bring some of those elements to the outsied

2. “This is what I think”

  • I agree with the love of the pattern and want to use it to the best of my abilities. I also agree that the the black is oddly placed.

3. “This is what I am going to do”

9/5/17: Box 2.0 design

Here she is. Still pretty simple but I’m content.

Outside box
inside box (colors look wonkey on here to me)

9/4/17: Narrowing down a design

I started doing drawings and looking up pictures to get and idea of what I want to do. I’ve decided to stick to the heart made with hands with the slogan “stand together, spread some love.”

Very rough doodles but I know my plan

9/3/17: Finishing the box

I started with the box template, I mimicked the box we were originally given to the best of my ability

There she is

Right now it is plain, but soon it will be covered in wondrous images and color. I will upload my new drawings or images once they are complete and I am content with them.

8/30/17: Assembling the box

Draft 1:

Draft 2: (happy about this one so using it for crit)

  1. “This is what I heard”
  • Better contrast between the colors

2. “This is what I think”

  • I definitely agree with making the main sticker more against hate using love (aka a clearer message). I went simple to start out, but I probably went too simple to start out so I will go back to the drawing board.

3. “This is what I am going to do’

  • I plan to go a little more in depth and add a bit more detail

8/29/17: Designing the idea

I started drawing ideas in my sketch book relating to some of the ideas I gathered from looking at the news that showed love trumping hate. While doing this I doodled hands in the shape of a heart. That sparked a whole new series of hand related ideas that I transferred onto my illustrator designs, which will be shown later.

This is what became of the hand idea. I felt there were a lot of ways to use hands because hands are used both for tearing down and building up, it’s all about who you are as a person and so I guess mine could either be love or unity now. Random ideas are fun!

8/28/17: Picking an idea

Love is the idea sticking out to me the most. I want to keep it relatively simple and recieved the idea to use current events to show my “love is greater than hate.”
