Taroko Gorge travel guide
Taroko is one the 8 national parks of Taiwan. It is considered one the most scenic attractions in Taiwan drawing thousands of hikers and natural lovers everyday.
Getting there
The Taroko national park locates near Hualien city. From Taipei you can take the TRA trains. The journey takes more than 2 hours and usually cost ~400 TND.
The Hualien bus company operates bus service to Taroko from its office next to the Hualien Railway Station. You can spot it easily after exiting the station (orange building on the left). One-day pass can only be purchased on the day of visiting. This is one of the less popular way so you don’t have to be afraid about ticket availability.
Getting around
By bus
You can find the time table as well as ticket price here. The same time table is available in the Hualien bus station and Taroko visitor center. The bus to Taroko departs from Hualien station towards TianXiang and stops at major attractions. With a one-day pass (250 TND) you can hop on/off at these stations. You can get a map with brief introduction to most popular trails and scenic spots at the visitor center.
Cycling
This might be the most physical demanding but fun way to explore Taroko. From Hualien bus station you can take the same bus and alight at Xincheng station (it’s a big bus station near Taroko so you won’t miss it) and rent a bike there. Beware that the road can be steep and narrow and there are long and dark tunnels.
By scooter
This seems to be the second most popular option (after taking a tour). You can rent a scooter almost everywhere in Hualien. You should make sure the scooter has adequate fuel as there is no gas station in Taroko.
Lodging and food
There are hotels near Taroko (within 2 km to the entrance) but most visitors choose to stay in Hualien. Budget hostels are also available. Although I didn’t really enjoy my stay at one of the hostel, my friend recommended the Aires Capsule Backpacker and from my visit I would confirm that it would be a nice place to stay. If you stay there, don’t hesitate to ask the owners for suggestions, they are nice people to talk with.
