“Lisa Smith gives us a darkly comic, honest, and completely relatable inside look at high-functioning addiction in the world of corporate law-a sort of ‘Sex and the Psych Ward.’ It’s inspiring, informative, and impossible to put down.”
— Jennifer Belle, best-selling author of High Maintenance and The Seven Year Bitch

“Whether she’s telling the town car driver to turn around so she can ditch showing up for her niece’s birth and meet her coke dealer, or staging her own semi-intervention, Smith takes us into t

Review: When I finished this book (as an ebook), I was a shocked by how many I-was-an-addict-who-got-sober stories that were recommended to me (“If you liked this book, here are fifty similar books you might like . . .) I like these stories of successful people who lost everything and then claw their way back up to success. In Lisa Smith’s story, she almost lost everything but caught herself before that happened, which is amazing considering that she says she didn’t go a day without drinking for ten years. The drinking eventually morphed into barely making it to eleven a.m. to an early lunch where she could order drinks, to starting to drink in the mornings and using coke to keep her going. How she kept her high-powered job while doing this and how she didn’t land in the hospital until the day she checked herself into detox is also stunning.

My favorite of this genre of nonfiction will always be Augusten Burroughs’ Dry because I laughed out loud and cried my guts out all through that one. I didn’t laugh or cry once during A Girl Walks into A Bar, but there are words of wisdom on living life sober. This book also didn’t have the harrowing aspects of a book like The Night of the Gun by David Carr because she wasn’t wandering into crack dens in the middle of the night. Instead, as a New Yorker, she just had boxes of wine delivered and would call her coke dealer as if she were ordering a pizza.

This is a well-written book for the genre, but it doesn’t break any new ground.

Review: For a female attorney who drank and used as copiously as Lisa Smith did, I’m surprised most anyone who had any contact with her in her firm wasn’t well aware that she had an addiction problem. I practiced law for many years as an active alcoholic, basically of the binge drinking variety. So even though I only drank on weekends for the most part, I learned you get pegged pretty quickly. There’s just too many ways for people to tell and for the firm’s lawyers to figure it out, no matter how good you are at maintaining. A little mouthwash in the mornings isn’t going to hide it.

So while I didn’t believe Smith’s version of how she was skating by undetected, I found her amazing somewhat repetitive drunkalogue both entertaining and scary, though shallow. Anyone with an alcohol or coke problem will find themselves here in full debilitating glory. The intense pressure we put on ourselves as active alcoholics is a crushing experience right up until we “stop digging.”

The recovery portion of this memoir is the best part. The fact that she never relapsed after initially seeking in-patient treatment and her willingness to change and grow into a sober person is an enlightening guide to all those who want to know what it really takes to turn it all around. If you’re having trouble grabbing hold of a program or path to sobriety, this just might be the book that helps you figure out what it takes.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars Excellent description of the desperation of addiction but…….

Review: If it’s possible to enjoy this type of book, I thoroughly liked the book, especially having walked in her “high heels.” Her descriptions of the physical, mental and emotional repercussions of addictive drinking and using took me back 20+ years and I lived through every episode of further desperate deterioration with her. However, a few things didn’t ring totally true. Almost no one could reach her level of addition and maintain a high-powered job in a big NY firm. Hangovers are debilitating. Drinking at 8:00 a.m. would have been discovered despite the gum and mouthwash we know doesn’t mask the smell of that much morning drinking, and the constant, severe tremors would have certainly been discovered. Second, if she was “shitting and vomiting blood,” this would have required far more medical follow-up since she’d obviously done damage to her internal organs. No mention of this in rehab. In real life, she would have been immediately taken to a hospital or referred to a G.I. doctor. Finally, her recovery was a little too neat and tidy. Pink clouds don’t last but she appeared to never fall off of hers. Sobriety is hard, hard, work and all of this was left out or
given short shrift in the last few pages. It’s not all happily ever after.

Review: Bought this book when a family member graduated law school and went to work in NYC big law. The drinking culture seems pervasive in that world, and the author’s fear of being discovered by her employer is evidently real, and sad at the same time. Enjoyed the read. Fearful that the disease is likely not on the decline in big law.

Title: .0 out of 5 stars I love a memoir

Review: I love a memoir. Especially one that digs deep. Lisa F. Smith’s A GIRL WALKS OUT OF A BAR does just that. She does not hold back. Smith has a double addiction — to alcohol and drugs. A successful attorney, she manages to keep her job while drinking day and night and snorting cocaine. She keeps her problem hidden from her family and close friends as well as her employer. Until one day, while drinking wine in the morning to make it to work, she realizes enough is enough and she must check herself into rehab. The story unfolds. Whether or not you have an addiction to drugs or alcohol, or something else, there is a lot to learn from this book. Gaining insight into complex issues and how to overcome them. The raw, intense honesty that the author shares is so brave. Putting yourself out there in this manner cannot be easy. Reading it was not easy. I can’t even imagine showing a picture of myself without makeup on a weekend morning on Instagram, let alone baring my darkest secrets in a book for the world to read as she has done. Kudos to you, Ms. Smith and here’s to your life without a drink in hand. May your world continue to be a clearer place and a more peaceful one for you.
