Zumba?

As you may know from my first blog entry when I went home for a nice long visit my former personal trainer kicked my butt and got me back on the right track. One of the things I did not mention in that first post is that she is a Zumba instructor. She teaches a Zumba class at a skating rink on Tuesday and Thursday nights and then invites people to her house to practice and learn new songs and routines on Saturday mornings.
Obviously (because she loves me and knew I needed this kick in the pants) she encouraged me to attend Zumba classes. Naturally I felt inclined to participate whenever possible- like I said before she said do it, so I did. Maybe a little grudgingly at first. As with everything else involving fitness and this woman I very much enjoyed myself. At first I was laughing at my own clumsiness (all the way in the back of the room so as not to distract people of course).
By the 2nd or 3rd class however I was laughing more from disbelieve. I was actually getting better! Somehow between the 3 day a week workouts and the occasional Zumba class I wasn’t practically dying when trying to do the steps!
For those who do not know me personally I am very clumsy. I assume that I always have been because it goes back as far as I can remember. Luckily for my middle daughter she seems to have inherited that trait from me. What can you do?
Naturally at the beginning of these Zumba classes I was missing steps and tripping on my own feet- but honestly by that 2nd or 3rd class I was actually doing well. Graceful even, if I do say so myself. Well graceful for me at least.
This evening instead of going for a walk around the neighborhood to get my steps in I decided to try the Zumba game on my wii. It’s Thursday night, my trainer/mom has a class, I’ll just pretend I’m there.
Ha! That did not work out! I swear I logged in to the 20 minute beginner class. I don’t know what the typical definition of beginner is nowadays though because I swear that stuff was on super speed! I struggled my way through it though (imaginary fist bump to my trainer) only to come up short on my steps at the end of it!
When I say short I mean significantly. With the exception of one night this last week I have hit 10,000 steps every night. Obviously it can be done so I must do it right? So in an effort to get those steps in, still after the 20 minute session, I went to the option for solo songs and picked one that said beginner.
Apparently this one said warm up, but it was much more my speed. At the end of that song (which was about 5 minutes) I saw that my steps weren’t awesome STILL so I tried another song.
I wonder if feeling the need to hit 10,000 steps is becoming an obsession?
At the end of that song I still wasn’t there! This is 30 minutes into Zumba on the wii and at that point I threw in the towel. I’m only human people! All I could think was my goodness- if this was Zumba back home I would be over my 10,000 already and having more fun and feeling less dead!
So my plea now is to my trainer….. Please come live with me and give me all your Zumba and fitness goodness always! Please please! Hopefully she read that. On a serious note she did tell me to join a Zumba class when I got home. An actual class. I suspect she knew that something like this would happen. She is a very smart woman after all.
