I agree with the author stance to use nontraditional methods to teach literacy and that is more important to teach comprehension than a particular text. I appreciated the author bringing to attention the disparity between whites and minority and how individualized teaching can bring success to all students. I enjoyed learning more about the correlation between disinterested students and performing poorly on tests- why would teach the books to the next generation that we hated when we were there age?! This was a compelling perspective on the importance of increasing motivation in adolescent students.
