3 secrets to Being a more authentic leader

The quality of a leader can impact hugely on the employees. If a leader expresses unreasonably high needs, a culture of fear is developed that can lead to high turnover.

So, if the leader is true and trustable, employees are more likely to be stable with the organization.

This is reflected in studies at the University of Nebraska. This is the study of entrepreneurial leadership.

It has been revealed the greatest predictor of whether or not people are happy in their jobs is not a corporate strategy or an office togetherness but a true leader.

The qualities of a strong leader can have a huge impact on the staff. If a leader tends to express unreasonably high demands, a culture of fear is likely to develop which can lead to high turnover.

Whereas, if the leader is true and believes, employees are more likely to stay.

This is expressed in the studies of the University of Nebraska. The study of entrepreneurial leadership demonstrated that it was the best indicator.

People are happy, healthier, and more productive it is not a company culture or an office comradeship. True leaders are behind them.

Similarly, Adam Weber, Chief People’s Officer at Emplify, has defined a true leader in his book Lead Like a Human.

Someone who is willing and able to be themselves, and who leads in a way that feels natural to who they are as a person.

However, being truly authentic can be said more easily than done, partly because many leaders have chosen to adopt the same style of leadership as their mentor or manager.

But to be truly authentic means to develop a style of leadership that is true to them as a person.

This is something that Weber referred to in his book: “Making time to look inward is the first step”.

It may be painful to take a long, hard look in the mirror, but it is a crucial first step in gaining the confidence needed to become your kind of leader.

Speaking to Forbes, Weber also describes three secrets that would help leaders become truly authentic.

1. Encourage honest feedback

Once you’ve reached the peak of your professional life, where you’re in charge of managing a few people. It can be simple to believe that the best way is yours.

However, everybody has weak points and, as such, empowering honest & useful feedback can help combat this.

Becoming much more self-aware requires you to shine a light on areas that you can improve on, which you may not necessarily be aware of, which will help you to become more aware of authenticity as a leader.

2. Focus on a routine

Weber motivates leaders to think about their daily activities to find out what works for them. For example, do you enjoy workouts first thing in the morning?

Are you more result-oriented at night? What’s going to help you switch off at the end of the day? By asking yourself these questions, you can discover what makes you work, and get the best version of yourself while you’re at work.

He explained “I have a lot of colleagues where ‘early to bed and early to get up. They are nothing but bad-tempered and exhausted.

We are all different individuals, with different patterns and methods. There is no global answer to what motivates and keeps us grounded.

3. Learn to self-reflect

For many, focusing on oneself is not an easy process. With this in mind, Weber suggested the art of ‘practicing’ this. To encourage leaders to establish a daily routine of self-reflection.

To launch this off, he advised leaders to choose a recording method, such as diary notes, voice recordings, or a notebook.

To begin with, leaders should ask themselves several questions, including, ‘What brings you energy today? What makes you stress? and what do you notice about yourself today?
