In a display of unbridled capitalist hubris, our modern-day robber baron Elon Musk has once again proven that the pursuit of profit knows no bounds, not even the sovereignty of nations. With the subtlety of a sledgehammer and the moral compass of a particularly rapacious conquistador, Musk declared to the world, “We will coup whoever we want! Deal with it”. One can almost hear the ghost of William Walker applauding from his unmarked Honduran grave.

The object of Musk’s imperial desire? Bolivia’s vast lithium reserves, a crucial component for the batteries that power his electric car empire. It seems our intrepid entrepreneur has decided that democracy is an inconvenient obstacle when there are resources to be plundered and fortunes to be made. How tiresome it must be for the world’s wealthiest man to have to contend with the petty concerns of sovereign nations and their elected leaders.

Evo Morales, Bolivia’s first indigenous president, had the temerity to suggest that perhaps Bolivia’s resources should benefit Bolivians. Such quaint…
