My friend Laura Hosman is an Associate Professor in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society at Arizona State University (ASU). She also holds the position of Senior Global Futures Scientist at the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory and is an Associate Professor in The Polytechnic School at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

Dr. Hosman’s research focuses on the role of information and communications technology (ICT) in developing countries, with a particular emphasis on its impact on socio-cultural factors, human development, and economic growth.
She is interested in the practical application of ICT in real-world settings and engages students in project-based courses and experiential learning opportunities. One of her current projects involves the design and deployment of the SolarSPELL (Solar Powered Educational Learning Library), a solar-powered digital library aimed at providing educational resources in areas with limited connectivity and electricity. The SolarSPELL has been introduced in over 275 primary schools and health care clinics across the Pacific Islands and East Africa, offering localized content and promoting information literacy and internet-ready skills.
Dr. Hosman has received recognition and awards for both her teaching and research. She has held academic positions at institutions such as California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), the Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Southern California (USC).
Her research has taken her to various countries, including Comoros, the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Haiti, Macedonia, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Samoa, Senegal, the Solomon Islands, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Tonga, and Vanuatu.
Funding for her research has been provided by organizations such as USAID, Google, the Internet Society, and the National Science Foundation, among others.
Her work has been published in academic journals like Information Technology for Development, Review of Policy Research, and International Journal of Media and Cultural Politics.
Dr. Hosman holds a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Public Policy, an M.A. in Economics, and an M.A. in International Relations. She earned her B.A. in Political Science with magna cum laude honors from Wheaton College.
Her areas of expertise include quality of life, appropriate technology, ICT for development, experiential learning, climate action, quality education, and affordable and clean energy.
