The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), considered a pro-Western and pro-independence party in Taiwan, clashed with the opposition Kuomintang (KMT), often seen as leaning towards China, in a heated parliamentary session on Friday.

Chaotic Scenes in Taiwan’s Parliament

Lawmakers from the two rival parties engaged in physical altercations, with punches thrown, shoving, and screaming over proposed parliamentary reforms pushed by the KMT. The chaotic scenes unfolded as the DPP, which lost its majority in January’s elections, faced challenges from the emboldened opposition.

The DPP, led by President Tsai Ing-wen until recently, has taken a firm stance against China’s claims over Taiwan and has sought to strengthen ties with the United States and other Western allies. In contrast, the KMT has historically favored closer relations with Beijing and has opposed formal independence for Taiwan.
