10 things you know when your dad is a musician

Whether he plays at a coffee shop, teaches lessons in your house, or makes a living off the jams, if your dad is a musician, you know these are true.

1. Silence is not an option

He just can’t stand it and honestly neither can you. Tunes must always be blaring- in the car, in the house, on headphones. He must have some kind of noise even if that means talking, singing or whistling to himself. If your dad is silent, it probably means you're in trouble.

2. Everything is an instrument

Don’t worry folks: he’s not hitting me. I’m a drumset.

3. You always know what to get him for Christmas.

If your dad is a musician, you just can’t go wrong with a rock t-shirt, some drumsticks, guitar picks or a gift card to Guitar Center.

4. That one joke never gets old

How many musicians does it take to change a lightbulb?

5. You can nap anywhere

As a baby, you quickly learned how to sleep while the band practiced in your living room. Your dad thought naptime was the perfect time to break out his instrument. Now your nap skills have become so powerful you could nap at a rock concert.

6. Jamming is family bonding

If your dad is a musician, chances are, you are too, and you know nothing makes your dad happier than jamming with you and your siblings.

7. Bars have no age limit

If your dad was playing at a bar, your mom dragged you along for the show even if the joint was for adults-only. Now that you’re older, your dad thinks he can join you and your friends for drinks because he’s “hip.”

8. He thinks he’s so cool

Speaking of hip, if your dad is a musician, he really does think he’s still a rockstar. Whether he’s trying to pull off skinny jeans and Converse, or still sporting an 80’s mullet, he thinks he’s way cooler than your friends’ suit-and-tie dads.

9. You can’t overplay the classics.

You’ve probably heard more Pink Floyd and Rush than you’ve ever wanted to hear. And if the singer sings a high note, the guitar player has a solo, or the drummer plays a cool fill, you better believe your dad is replaying that part of the song over and over. And over.

But it’s just so good. Let’s play it one more time.

10. You wouldn’t trade him for all the regular dads in the world

My dad

As weird and annoying as he can be, you love your dad and his rockstar ways. He gets you backstage access to band practices, he teaches you the classics, and he taught you to express yourself through art and music. He’s the best dad in the world.
