Design Thinking: 5 Steps to Understand

Intro to Design Thinking

The basis to Design Thinking relies on a person’s mindset when they are designing ideas and envisioning future plans. A quick guide to design thinking involves 5 mindsets that a design thinker must possess in order to be successful.

Empathize

The first method for design thinking is empathizing with the people that you interact with. Empathizing allows the design thinker to get a great understanding of someone’s ideals and values and how they feel about your ideas. This can be achieved by observing and engaging with your fellow users, while also exposing yourself to the experiences of the other users as well.

Define

The next method for Design Thinking is defining your empathizing findings to tackle any obstacles that may arise in the future. This allows you to form a point of view on the matter based on those findings that clearly states the vision you have moving forward. A good Point of View should provide focus, inspire users, fuel brainstorms, and capture the hearts of the people.

Ideate

The third method to the Design Thinking process is to ideate about alternatives in order to maximize the amount of ideas that can be formed from your design. This method helps you to think further than the obvious solutions to the issues, and also help uncover new possibilities of exploration.

Prototype

The next method of Design Thinking is prototyping the ideas that were explored in the earlier steps of the process. Prototyping should be kept in a rough stage so they can always be expanded upon when new ideas come to fruition. It can be used to solve disagreements between team members, start conversation, and test ideas with much investment.

Test

The final method to the Design Thinking process is testing your design to receive feedback and determine solutions to improve it. Testing should be used to expand upon the prototypes and provide more insights that could possibly alter your point of view.
