When we think of the word “designer”, we probably imagine a lone artist who draws up pretty designs on the spot. And when we pick a new piece of technology, they tend to overlook the reason why the product looks and functions the way it does. In reality, there is a process behind every design and a team of workers that strive to meet certain expectations.
Designers are strategic thinkers and they are required to make their products cater to humans. Most designers follow a methodology of human-centered design ethos (Brown, 2008) . Which means that designers will personally collect data from their consumers and decide what features will be helpful in their innovations. For example, the team at IDEO was re-designing the shopping cart, so they conducted a field research to build a foundation for their designs. They asked customers and supermarket employees what their concerns were for the current design of typical shopping cart, and then went to the company to report back and start designing. The team proceeds on constructively criticizing each other’s designs and building from the customer’s feedback before moving forth with a final product. Designing is a process to which no first design is ever completely perfect, and there’s always room for improvement. To build products well, designers need to collaborate with each other and understand the exact needs of their customers. Making a product look pretty is a low priority during the first stages of their process.
