Does everyone still dress up for Halloween?
Acey Reyes is a young 21 year old originally from Moloka’i Hawaii. Moloka’i has a population of around 7,404 on the island. She moved to Southern Oregon University for college when she was 17, I wanted to ask her a few questions on what it was like to celebrate Halloween in Hawaii.
When asked about what Halloween was like growing up, Acey talked about how in Moloka’i they didn’t fully celebrate Halloween like it’s celebrated here in Oregon. Acey states “Dressing up was only a thing for kids. Adults and college students don’t dress up to go out. Everything revolves around the kids”. She also talked about how the candy was also different, in Moloka’i they gave out goodie bags rather than singular candy pieces.
Another question I asked Acey was how does she personally feel about Halloween? When Acey was asked this question, she pondered on it for a second. Acey talked about how she hasn’t really celebrated Halloween since she was a kid. She states “I feel like it’s a way for people to dress up in a light in which society doesn’t normally accept so I guess in a way it’s good especially in the aspect where it’s good to make people feel better about themselves. Though I can also see where it might allow people to be fake along with them being their own true selves”.
Everyone has their own experience with Halloween-some people love it, some people hate it, and some people don’t really have an opinion on it. Where do you stand?
