Introduction

It’s 2025 and Data Teams are officially being taken for fools by folks in the Modern Data Stack. I posted recently about a few price increases that are forcing architects and Data Leads to re-think their architecture in favour of more modular approaches.

Specifically, the approach of “we’ll just use one tool for [ ]” is no longer feasible. Sadly, this is not due to a technical constraint but due to cost — the 2021 funding environment encouraged us to leverage point solutions which are all now feeling the pain of tighter market conditions. Pain that is now being passed on to us data engineers.

In this article, no, GUIDE, I’ll walk you through what these price increases are and why you should use these as an excuse to reinvest time into modernising data architecture as well as tooling.

We’ll then cover some pragmatic steps you can take to mitigate cost, followed by some technical examples too.

By the end, you should be in a position to leverage the ELT price increases to your advantage.
